@N64_Wallmaster - the part number PTR18-35092 in the first post is no longer available from Toyota.

New toyota part nbr is PT280-35220-G0

FN Wheels also has blank alum disc center caps available as well (click HERE)

I'm running these with a 1.25" spacer for now. Not sure if I'll keep them long term. The look is great to my eye but I do worry about stress on the wheel bearings.

Well damn it, uncle baby billy, I was on the fence about these, but I trust you, because you're selfless, and you want to help as many people as the dear lord lets you.

The only reason I could see to hold out would be to wait on the updated 17x9 -25 version with the bead grip stuff. Looks like a pretty cool update to these wheels.

So, the new Countersteer model is flow formed A356 T6 Dubal aluminum alloy.

The most popular major brands (which I won't name) that you'll see on most Tacomas and typically cost around $300-350 per wheel can't compete with this. Their best-selling "lower-tier" models are solid cast, so they weigh about 10 pounds more and have a theoretically lower tensile strength than the new FN wheels.

In short, the new Countersteers are lighter, stronger, and over $100 cheaper per wheel compared to the similarly marketed wheels from "major brand."

Unless I'm missing something, these wheels are a no-brainer.

Can anyone share details about the construction of other models like the Countersteer Offroad and the original Countersteer Type X? Material, and construction method?

    Hi @N64_Wallmaster

The original versions of the 17x8" Countersteer Type X and 16x8" Countersteer Offroad wheels are cast aluminum. They're made from the same high grade, A356 T6, virgin aluminum alloy as the new 17x9" Countersteer Type X flow formed wheels.

We released the original 16x8" Countersteer Offroad in 2006 and the 17x8" Countersteer Type X in 2007. There have been a few updates and upgrades to these wheels over the years, but the manufacturing process has remained relatively the same for these two wheels. These two models are tried and true designs that have proven to be excellent quality for a longer period of time than many wheel brands have been in business.

Shoot, this thread alone goes back to 2010 (although I must apologize for not updating this thread as frequently and for not being as active on this forum in recent years).

The newest version of the Countersteer Type X is a super strong, light weight, 17x9" flow formed wheel. We incorporated all of the new features that you mentioned to increase the strength of the wheels, provide strong bead retention at low PSI, and to provide a more aggressive stance that also allows for a little more suspension clearance with wider tires and/or bypass shocks, spindle gussets, etc.

    https://www.fnwheels.com/store/prod...er-type-x-17x9-25mm-6x139-set-of-four-wheels/

I agree with you. None of the "major brands" offer a similar price to quality ratio, and the cheaper brands don't offer comparable quality for the price.

The super low price wheels that you see only on Amazon, EBAY, Facebook marketplace, etc. are mostly fly by night operations, or at best they'll stick around for a couple of years, make a quick buck, and then fold up shop once they get too many complains. I've seen it happen many times. These "companies" have zero input into the engineering, design, manufacturing process, etc. Most of these guys just found the cheapest stuff on Alibaba.com, bought a container of wheels, and entered "the wheel business."

If you have any other questions about our wheels, our processes, or our company feel free to contact me anytime.

And to keep this thread on topic, here are some pictures of the new 17x9" Countersteer Type X flow formed wheels on Tacomas.

Thanks for the intel. I've since purchase a set of bronze TRD beadlock-style wheels, however.

The 17x9" -25mm offset Countersteer Type X wheel will :

    • Fit over the brakes on a 2022+ Tundra.
    • Fit over the studs on a 2022+ Tundra.
    • Fit the bolt pattern of the 2022+ Tundra.
    • Fit over the hub on the 2022+ Tundra.
    • Meet (actually exceed) the load rating requirement for the 2022+ Tundra.
With that being said, I would not recommend that the wheels be installed on new (2022+) Tundra, because the offset is far too low.

We make a couple of other 17" options for the 2022+ Tundra and one 18" option. We're working on developing more wheels with higher offsets to fit the 2022+ Tundra as well. The offset should definitely be positive (not negative) for the 2022+ Tundra, preferably somewhere in the range of +20mm to +40mm.

I also should have mentioned that we worked up a 17" Countersteer Type X design for the new Tacoma / new Tundra with a positive offset, but we haven't begun production of the wheels yet. These are the early renderings of the 17" positive offset Countersteer Type X for the 2024+ Tacoma and 2022+ Tundra.

Note that the lip is shallower than the 17x9" -25mm offset version. This rendering/prototype is of a 17x9" +32mm offset (final production width/offset to be determined prior to production).
