Hi all, I just sold my 20”4 Taco SR5 to my brother and need to upgrade so test drove a 25 Taco and liked it fine, but was stunned to see the 4x4 selector right beside the drink holder and where my arm could bump it. Have any of you had issues with water getting in that switch from grabbing a drink or from wet arms when getting back into the truck while it’s raining hard?

Seems the ‘22 had it on the dash which makes more sense to me.

    Thanks in advance.

You will really have to bump it since you have to press the side button before you turn the dial to shift out of 2wd.

I am worried about water getting down in there - how well is it sealed?

Not sure how well it is seal, but based off the square buttons it is going to take a hell of a lot of liquid to get inside them. But I have seen zero issues reported of anyone having issues with spilling liquid over that area and having any issues with any of the buttons.

Thanks! So no problems with liquid or crumbs getting down in there? I love the new Tacoma but the location of that knob was just weird to me!

Well, I live close to a great BBQ joint (Pierce’s BBQ in Williamsburg) and they use plastic cups that sweat alot in our summer humidity (same goes for me after a big sammich) so hopefully I can keep things dry!

Search the forum. I genuinely think you're the first person to raise this. Not something that seems to be any kind of an issue. The cupholders keep things nice and secure. Don't think it's really a problem. Get the truck and have a good time!

My 2021 4Runner (limited) selector switch is similar but on the passenger side. My wife leaves drinks in it all the time, so it was going to be a problem it would have by now

I think it’s alright. Prob more likely someone to turn the 4wd switch on a 3rd Gen at night instead of the AC fan.

Never a problem with the 4wd, but if your a bigger guy( 6’2” 290 ) your leg can rub the switch and change mode from normal, to sport,to econo. Happened a few times

The selector is a weird spot it does not look very ergonomic. I still haven't driven a 4G so the selector location is probably fine. IMO Toyota should have skipped the QI charging pad and made better use of the area where the charging pad is. All those consoles controls except the parking brake switch could have been on the dash.

Hmm, that does look like to silly spot. Of course, I would prefer mechanical lever like 2nd gens vs a knob i have in the 3rd gen.

I wasn't aware of any 2nd gen models that had a mechanical lever. My TRD Off Road had a dial.

Should be OK. All your power window switches are exposed to rain if you crack the windows open a little. The 4Runner's tailgate window switch and seat heater switches are right next to the cupholder, hasn't been a problem in 15 years:

Both the 4WD selector and center console grab handle are plagiarized from the Bronco. Though the 4WD selector is opposite of the Bronco's layout where the buttons select 4WD while the dial collar selects the drive modes:

One needs to get all the other buttons set and configured too. I can offer some good advice there.

I did not want a moonroof so should have put more thought into the ejector seats. My testing that did not go well. A state trooper did not think the oil slick and smoke features funny like some friends did. That experience was a reminder the invisibility switch needs more work.

As for the 4x4 switch and liquids - no problems with either of them but one friend said drinking on the tailgate at freeway speeds in winter was not fun. He looked pissed off when I asked if it was that little indent in tailgate not big enough.

Are these active buttons or just stickers?
I would be interested in some additional buttons on mine as well if they are functional.

If there’s concern over front spillage during off road driving, note that Toyota also provides great cup space immediately behind the center console storage, well away from 4x4 controls. Just watch your elbows.

Meantime, we can definitely file this thread under the category, “First World Issues”.

They are stickers you can get online and maybe here, Reddit or other forms have shown me others have had similar fun. Do a web search for "poverty button stickers".

I had more entertainment learning those are also called poverty buttons.
