True! Most people don't consider largemouth bass a great food fish. But, out of clean water, they're actually pretty good.

Fun story... Some of you know I have a serious allergy to poultry. Like anaphylaxis serious. I had gator once. A friend prepared a gumbo dish with it for my birthday. A couple bites in I started having those familiar swelling feelings in my neck and throat. Yeah, that was a miserable rest of the night. People say it tastes like chicken and evolutionarily speaking birds and reptiles are pretty close and gators likely have the protein in poultry that my dumb immune system rejects. No gator for me.

True, but IMHO perch, walleye or even bluegill out of that same clean water are better eating, and half of a largemouth bass is it's head. Bass fishing is fun, but I prefer to release them to fight another day.

This was actually my last fish of this year's ice fishing a couple weekends ago:

    True.

I was just saying that a fish's environment or diet affects its flavor. Northern are generally great eating. But, I've eaten Northern that were kinda gross that were living in shallow, muddy water. Incidentally, this was on the Mondeaux Flowage, where Picnic Point is.

Largemouth is better than Smallmouth. Smallmouth is kinda mushy.

I'm catch and release everything because I hate cleaning fish.
Like this beautiful walleye, I tossed back last summer.

Same. I'd probably eat more fish if I didn't have to clean it.

On the family fishing trips I used to go on with my Dad and brothers, two guys would team up cleaning fish, and it wasn't bad.

Walleye are nice, because they're easy to filet, and you're only cleaning a few fish. Panfish kinda suck, because you have to clean so many.

Those guys that sit and clean out buckets full of Crappie?
    Not for me. lol

Have you ever had smelt? Use to be big when I was a kid. I didn't clean them (not sure ya have to) but I remember frying them up.
Pull out the backbone if you like, otherwise chomp them down like french fries. :D

Oh there will be some mods all right
We have a nice clear lake by me that actually has an overabundance of largemouth and smallmouth and they want you to keep small ones. It's a slot where you can keep them 14 inches and under and then over I think it's 21 inches so if I can fill the live well full of 13-13.5 inchers I'll have a fish fry once or twice a summer. Also are any of you getting hammered by snow? We are getting such bad conditions where I'm at that my plant actually shut down for the day.

    We're supposed to get 3-6".
Our plant will never shut down.
Boss would probably be ecstatic if we all got snowed in at work.

We never shutdown for the first 5 years of me working here but they realized in recent times when the weather is so bad not only does it endanger the employees by driving in, but so many people call in anyway that not much gets done by the handful of people who actually show up.

Tried Snow Goose as bacon, meat stick and just marinated on Monday at a potluck. It was delicious!

Supposed to be doing a pheasant shoot on Sunday. I've had it before. Trick seems to be to not overdo it or it'll dry out. Open to any recipe ideas though.....

My ex and I ate a lot of bass on one camping trip, probably 20 years ago. That's when it really hit me about the difference in flavor. We had one caught in a clear, sandy lake one day, and one from a muddy lake the next day, and the difference was significant.

It's raining here, but supposed to switch to snow this afternoon. It's also supposed to get pretty windy. I'll probably have to go home early due to the unsafe driving conditions. :D
