Ok, so I got the truck back yesterday, but I brought it back to the shop for a check engine light (cats are fucked from the oil and coolant from the head gasket going :spending:) and the fact that the starter grinds really bad when starting the truck. The shop has tried 6 different starters at this point, and they are pretty sure it is the flywheel that is causing the issue. They did have it resurfaced, but he called me and said that Toyota says to replace it every 120,000 miles (I'm at 125,000) and that I should get a new one. Problem is, it is $1000 for one from Toyota, plus labor costs. Are people really having to replace them that often? I already have so much money dumped into this shit show, I just don't know if this is something that their shop messed up, or was actually damaged or worn out. It worked fine before the engine failure. Thanks in advance

The shop wants you to replace a flywheel? Lawl. I have pulled 1980's flywheels from the back of 500,000+ mile BMW's and after wiping them down they look as good as new.

They gave you your truck back with the starter grinding when to start the truck? Not a fan of that either. They also gave it back to you with the CEL on? Oof.

The CEL came on after driving it a bit. They said the starter was noisy and they didn't like it and agreed to replace it. They said it is some floating flywheel or some shit and is complex and they can't just replace the ring wheel on it. They said toyota hides it but said that it does have a service life of 120,000 miles. They had it machined though, so idk if that has something to do with it. If anything, I am going to argue that they take the machining cost off, since they should have told me to replace it initially

Six starters? That's four too many...

That sucks, man...I get the fouled cats showing up later (might get lucky and it's just the sensors), but letting a vehicle leave the shop with a grinding starter is just plain UNSAT.

I've only done clutches on 4th gen f bodies. (LS1/T56) Sometimes with the starter/flywheel grinding you can losen the starter mounting bolt and move the starter over a butt hair before bolting it back down. Sometimes that takes care of the teeth being out of alignment on the starter and flywheel.

That was a huge job for that shop. Maybe someone with a fresh set of eyes needs to take care of the last couple of items? :notsure:

They tried that and it made it worse. I just picked up the truck, and I'm going to drive it for a bit until the new flywheel comes in. I'm going on a trip to the Colorado River for spring break here in a few days, but it should work its just a noisy start. They said that if I can manage to take a tooth off the starter on my trip, they can get the lifetime warranty engaged and it will cover the new flywheel and the starter, so fingers crossed for that. We worked out a deal for labor and everything at a nominal rate.

Toyota has a 25% off parts deal going right now, looks like you might be able to snag one for ~$550 online

Yeah dual mass flywheels are a whole different beast.

There's a "primary" and a "secondary" mass separated by some kind of damping material, usually a spring or some rubber. I'm not sure which one it is on Toyotas.

Basically it's supposed to soak up any vibrations but when the "damping" material fails, the secondary mass will just kind of slop to one side, reach its limit, and then match up with the primary flywheel mass.

The whole idea is a dual mass smooths out the vibration of the motor, which makes sense on a truck that might be dragging things around off road close to bogging.

The disadvantage is they're a ball buster to service or resurface or do anything other than just buy a new one.

Impulse purchase: a bore scope with a bendy end that you can manipulate.:spending:

Inside of cylinder 5 because it is easy to get to:

Not bad at all, though it's only got 55K I would say that's pretty minty clean. I was surprised at how good the combustion chamber looked! Cross hatching is still super bright, too.

Picked up a borescope when looking for a vehicle for my son when he was home on leave...worked great to inspect for 2GR timing cover, external coolant, and valley leaks (and anything else that was difficult to inspect). Worth their weight in gold and then some!

We looked at a lot of shit, but ended up finding him a mint ES350 that was surprise free...
