Which fog lights did you upgrade to???

Well I decided to go ahead and get the new lights installed. I haven't driven with them at night yet, but I did take a quick test drive when I finished. Everything in this kit is reversible, but with it installed you have to remove a lot of the plastics behind the grill and the active shutters. I'm going to track my fuel economy this week and see what kind of an impact it has. The outcome is exactly what I was hoping for though.

Do you receive any kind of warning light with the shutter disconnected? Is there a cap provided in the kit to plug it or did you use another method? Very curious to see if there's any impacts to MPGs with it removed. I like the discreet aspect of this mounting location!

 

motor is still hooked up, think he just removed the slats....
When customers are in a bind & financially broke & they come in for overheat concerns cuz they damaged their AGS, we break out & remove the slats completely & leave in the frame & motor assy. No CEL.....
Able to do this just through the front grill opening..

 

The passenger side mounting bracket has a new mount for the shutter motor so that it stays plugged in. The entire shutter frame is unbolted and removed. Nothing is cut or permanently modified so I could remove the lights and put the shutters back in if I wanted.

No issues on my daily commute today (32 miles each way). Engine temp was normal, no error codes, and fuel economy didn't appear to be any different (but it'll take more driving to know for sure).

A discreet mount is specifically what I wanted.

So far I've seen zero change in MPGs. I commute 64 miles round trip M-F and my fuel economy hasn't changed at all. Keep in mind that my commute doesn't take me above more than about 55mph so it's possible there could be a MPG hit above 60mph. Some of the reading I've done online claims the grill shutters are mostly active above 60mph to help with aerodynamics.

 

I appreciate the update! I have it in my cart and likely going this route with Rigid DDS Pros from my last vehicle and a new pair of yellow DD SSC2 fogs.

 

I went with the Rigid 37201 fog lights in amber. Easy install and very bright

 

Clean installs for sure and looks great! But there is so much naively wrong with all this advice. It is surprising you consulted with a major lighting manufacture and ended up at this ill-advised result for declared street use. If @Baja Designs did actually consult and make these recommendations for street use it would show disregard SAE compliance standards and negligence in understanding and advising on street use lighting setups. I really hope that isn't the case.

Off-road lights in off-road patterns are less useful and less safe than SAE patterns for street use. Unfortunately your decisions actually reduce your lighting performance effectiveness for street use rather than enhance it. Blinding other drivers with patterns that don't have a cut off is not beneficial and is more hazardous while the patterns without a cut off also perform worse in poor weather. There are no benefits. If you wanted an aux high beam then an aux SAE J581 high beam tied to your high beam circuit (which BD does not sell) rather than a combo light in your fogs would be the correct choice and significantly more effective.

I got this SDHQ kit sitting on my workbench in garage waiting for some time. I didn't realize it negated teh shutters, as I thought it had relocation brackets...guess I should have read the instructions first. Either way it looks like no issues from your perspective, so I may still do it, as it does look good!

I was thinking of cutting the grill plastic cross piece to push the light through flush...is this possible with the mounting bracket to move forward?

 

I agree here. Several of the fog light replacement kits are not SAE approved and will not provide the best light pattern for the intended driving conditions.

I'm opting to keep the factory fogs while adding Rigid ditch lights and amber DD SSC2 SAE fogs in the SDHQ bracket. Adds flexibility to use each when appropriate and not blind oncoming traffic. Hoping to install in the next couple weeks!

 

So far I've experienced no issues with the grill shutters removed. I'm very happy with how the finished product turned out.

My lights are pushed as far forward as possible on the mounting brackets. You would have to make some kind of extension if you want the lights to stick through the lower grill.

For on-road applications, we ALWAYS recommend our SAE-approved lights. Ultimately, we can't control what the customer chooses, but we want to make it clear that we’ve explained multiple times that these lights are not street-legal and are not meant for on-road use. We only recommend these lights for off-road use or in a controlled/isolated environment which was explained to the customer.

Installed the DD SS6 fogs today, took about an hour and a half following the DD video. Pretty easy but just a pain in the ass to get to the fog light. The biggest headache is getting the 1/4 turn plastic nuts to slip thru the felt/carpet fender liner hole. I can’t seem to get the holes to line up! If you’ve got any tips/tricks, let me know!

The felt isnt very rigid, I stabbed the felt into the collar & then positioned it better by using a pick in the hole to manipulate it further into proper position / verifying it was into position if that makes sense.
Really really dumb design, they could have easily just used screws & speed nuts just like everywhere else securing the felt...
But engineers are much smarter than us......

 

How do you like the DD fogs? I have not gotten around to installing the set I got for Christmas, mostly due to weather and work.

 

Couldn’t decide between clear or amber? Came across Alpharex double tap fogs that change color by turning them off/on from the factory switch.
