Hey y'all, I bought a 2017 Tacoma Sr5 last year and have been working on rebuilding it (totaled). I have finally got it to the point where it's time to pass emissions. I brought it in and they told me I failed due to a non oem pcm configuration. Now I know the gentleman who owned the car before me had a pedal commander and know that sometimes failures can arise from that. I was just curious on any other ideas for why this would occur?

Colorado test for modified ECUs as part of their emissions testing process so if you failed it was probably due to a tune.

Find a tuner in your area and have the stock tune flashed onto the PCM.

    Not enough info....
Is the pedal commander still installed?
    As stated, maybe a tune?
Need more details, not sure how a non oem pcm would fail emissions test?
Unless the pcm shows it belongs to a different make & model, something wacky....
    As stated, more info....
Pretty sure they make non toyota manufactured pcm's & under no circumstance should it emission test fail cuz its aftermarket, if its still oem config.

I've done some calling and the 2 previous owners haven't tuned the truck. I'll call around for a flash just in case but I'll definitely look further into the pcm and see what's it's reading. Also will take a look at non Toyota pcms and see if something fishy is going on. Thanks.

Didnt you get specific details inregards to exactly what they saw, codes, errors, etc...
What did they experience / witness exactly?
Youre kind of not making sense, no percise details...
Not trying to be a douche, just saying...
Cant help as you dont have specifics, vague in the grand scheme of things...

Does anyone know if resetting the PCM via disconnecting battery negative cable for an hour deletes tune and goes to factory default?
I’m dealing with the same Colorado emissions issue.

No. It is hardcoded. But if the 2 previous owners have not tuned, then you should not have to worry about that. At this point I'd head to a Toyota dealer and see what they can find out about what is in your truck. They should not charge anything to reflash with a new updated OEM file.

Loastad, I'd assume not, as the tune should replace the oem parameters in a non-volatile memory. Otherwise, anyone who needed to change a dead battery or jumpt start their vehicle would have to get their dealer/oem representative to reflash the vehicle every time.

@OP, have you had to change any major parts with the rebuild? Do you know if there were only two previous owners? At this stage, definitely remove the pedal commander and if you can, drive the vehicle for a while to let all the emissions systems run their checks.

no, disconnecting the battery doesnt get rid of your aftermarket tune & re-installs factory parameters...

Our tune holds CARB-EO D-883 and will not have issues with CO emissions for those of you who want to enjoy your truck without having to flash it back to stock to be emissions compliant.

Hit up @MGMSangTaco, and he'll get you taken care of, and you can put this stuff behind you forever.

Hey Blake, I PM’d you but happy to help/shed some light for anyone else reading. It sounds like the truck was indeed tuned at one point or another by someone if it’s reporting as a non-OEM ECU.

As Justin mentioned above, OTT holds a CARB-EO for the 3.5L 3rd Gen Tacoma. The OTT tune comes with the paperwork and CARB sticker, a detailed invoice from us for the techs at aircare as some require it after failing (we have a lot of experience with this now), in addition to free retunes/adjustments if you ever need them in the future.

The easiest way to book is via our website:
    www.coloradotoyotatuning.com

We’re based in Denver (open mon-sat) and cover the front range/east of the continental divide in CO and do occasional tune meets in Fort Collins and Colorado Springs.

If anyone wants additional info, the best way to reach us is at:
    Adam@coloradotoyotatuning.com
    Or biz cell 303-500-3312
    _________________________________

    To clarify some things above
-Disconnecting the battery will not wipe a tune etc.
-If it was indeed tuned with XYZ tune from whomever, a dealer ECU update (aka “TSB”, which I don’t believe is free either after a certain amount of years/mileage) won’t return the CVN to factory settings due to encryption within the software itself to protect IP. OTT thoroughly tested and confirmed this. The only way to return it to factory CVN is by flashing the stock file within the software (which dealers don’t have)
-Based on above, the two current methods for passing currently are 1) Have a local tuner flash it to stock and have to deal with the gear hunting, dead pedal, hesitation etc, or 2) Get OTT and not have to worry about any of this.
