Vaushaus, I am trying to nail that down on my 01. I was towing with a 94 Chevrolet and got the tc. Lockup figured out on it. It's a lot easier to determine with a load.
I just did a trip with the 01 TRD. 200lb over the max combined weight rating. If you watch the RPM close you can determine /differentiate the lock up and the shifts to another gear. With out a significant load it's hard to detect on mine. Chevrolet same thing.
I observed in OD it would shift in & out of lock up but it was very hard to make it come out of lockup and "Beware" the fluid temperature immediately starts to climb significantly!
With OD (4th) locked out 3rd gear also would go in and out of tc lockup with similar temperature response. It seems like I was able to manipulate the lockup while in 3rd with the OD button but not consistently.
The Chevrolet has a circuit through the brake lite switch that lets you force it out of lock up by tapping the brakes while holding a steady throttle. I couldn't get the Taco to do that.
Basically it wants to be in lockup in 3rd and 4th and from what I see from the fluid temperature that's the best for Trans life.

I recently installed an UltraGauge and noticed they now (instruction revision July 1, 2021) include instructions for monitoring transmission temperature on 1st gens. All of their code is the same as @GLR except for the X and /. He has an X of 0009 and a / of 0005. UltraGauge shows an X of 0001 and a / of 0001. I've only plugged in the UltraGauge given values, but I wonder if anyone has run the OP's values and then changed to the UltraGauge values and noticed a difference?

if you have the iltragage and it pops up with a code that start with 19 you will have to go to to m gauge and put these codes into all of them I had to put it into 3 different before it finally popped up

What transmission do you have? As far as I know this works with 2001-2004 A340E and A340F. Some earlier trucks get it working.

The code is on your drivers door sticker.

    I don't have a door jam sticker.
Tried ordering one at the dealership, they told me that mine didn't come with one from the factory.
When they punch in my VIN, it says not available.
They said that they didn't always come with one back then.
We had a 96' in the family, original owners since day 1, it didn't have a door jam sticker either.
Is this a transmission temperature sensor?PXL_20250218_203354704~2.jpg

Are you having issues with all the readings or just the transmission temp?

Heat is not an issue with the manual trans. The autos have a temp sensor because heat is an issue on them.
