First Impressions: Nokian Outpost AT’s

I typically run Blizzaks in the winter, but with this latest winter storm I decided to shift to my (new) Nokian Outpost AT’s for the (last?) big snow of the season. My first impressions:

- Dry road noise is a bit more than the OEM Goodyears, but not objectionable.
- Dry road traction? Fine.
- Eight inches of heavy, wet snow: Good traction, both launching and stopping
- Packed snow: Fine.
- Ice: Fine.

No regrets, yet. Looking forward to see how they do in dirt, gravel and rocks.

 

I struggled for a long while with linear acceleration. Not sure what was up. But, they seem to cycle in or something? Did really well in what we have seen too much of lately.

Got close to 15k on them and the 80% symbol is still there with depth to it.

 

After 15k miles … highway, gravel and dirt - snow, ice, wet and warm … no regrets.

No mud experience …

 

After 35k miles and in 55F temps, the wet traction is poor on asphalt roads that are merely wet due to light rain. Sigh …

 

Disappointed: 50k miles in two years and they are dry rotting.

 

Nokian has authorized a warranty claim for dry rot of all four tires. Purchased and installed in November 2022.

I keep relearning lessons with new tire models. Pirelli Angel GTs on my bike (dangerous, IMHO), Pirelli P-Zero Nero A/S, Dunlop D6000 Asymmetric (I believe), these Nokians, and I think one other set of something that we have had.

 

There's like a 3 year span of nokians that will always rot like that due to a manufacturing flaw in one of their plants. Props to Nokian tho, I have spoken with their head of product development and they're always looking for feedback. They sent me a set of these to test.

 

I have been running Nokian WG’s for years, without problems, on my daily drivers. I was saddened to discover the dry rot. Kudos to Nokian for giving me $85/corner.
