clunk when getting on gas after coasting

hey guys new problem just started, when i’m coasting and i get back on the gas in first or second gear i get a clunk i think it might be driveline related? 06 manual 4.0
here’s a clip of one of the u joints moving a bit, not sure if that’s normal but it seems to make a small clunk like i’m hearing

anyone have a similar problem before? it’s just 1 clunk then as soon as i get on and off the gas in low gears it clunks again

Replace ujoint immediately!!! Gonna break while driving make more damage and be stuck somewhere.

Oh yeah man that thing is toast. New ujoint time. Makes sense to swap them all out along that shaft.

 

Regardless of where the clunk may be coming from: Replace all of them (u-joints) as soon as possible, before a catastrophic failure launches the driveshaft and takes out other expensive parts with it. It's good you included the video. That U-joint is bad: there should be NO play in any of them.

No joke: I wouldn't drive it. If the shaft comes up through the floor when things let go, it's going to ruin your whole day.

 

I'm surprised you haven't felt any vibration before this. You're asking for trouble by driving it.

okay so is it just the front on connection to the transmission and the rear one to the diff?

 

There should be 3 ujoints + a carrier bearing since these are 2-piece shafts. Good idea to replace the whole kit. Can find kits online that include everything.

 

That's about a half mile from serious damage.

Good luck man. Pulling the shaft out is pretty straight-forward (but be ready because they are heavy). The hardest part is getting the old ujoints out, but hopefully they will come out without too much swearing.

 

you know if the u joints are universal or some are bigger some are smaller? maybe the transfer case ones are the same size as the rest diff one? then the middle joint might be different not sure

Yeah.... Watch some videos online and replace all three and the center carrier bearing immediately.
That thing is going to strand you.

 

I would imagine they're all the same but I have not swapped them on a 2g so I don't want to say for sure. Stick with whatever Spicer/Toyota recommends for your application though.

OOF. Spray em all with penetrating oil now and every day until the replacements show up.

 

i might be cooked but my girlfriends dad can get the parts in tmr im just gonna spray it tonight and tmr after work, if worse comes to worse i gotta get the torch LOL
