I'll have to see if I can find the video, but I saw a very convincing video of someone preparing some deer legs that looked absolutely mouth-watering fairly recently lol.

IMG_5498.png Went to plant some saw tooth oaks today on our lease and move cameras to fields to try to check on turkeys. Found one side small scrubby shed. Just checked one and have a buck still holding both sides. Thought it was mighty late to still be holding.

MANY moons ago I read an article by a wildlife biologist that said a buck will not drop (or keep them much longer) his antlers after he loses his virility - the ability to reproduce. Not sure how true it is, but anything is possible. They had bucks with antlers in April or May if I recall. But, I am an OLD FART so my recollection isn't what it used to be!!!

Penn State has their 'deer pens' research area, so I wonder if they might know if this is true or not. I gotta try to figure out how to contact the researchers there. Probably other deer research centers in other places, too???

Google says that’s false but rather “well nourished and healthy bucks will hold thier antlers longer”

testosterone levels dictate antlers dropping. When T levels drop, it weakens the connective tissue and they fall off. So it makes sense that a buck that’s on the age decline wouldn’t hold antlers longer cause if he’s on the reproductive decline he’s likely got low T (me too, Buck. Me too )

Nitrogen Requirements for Antler Growth and Maintenance in White-Tailed Deer
Mark A. Asleson, Eric C. Hellgren and Larry W. Varner

I was thinking maybe a high doe ratio might artificially help breeding bucks retain. (Keep Testosterone) But when the doe population is high it usually coincides with the nutrition resources being denuded and actually make bucks drop antlers faster. It’s mostly Nitrogen and proteins says researchers.
