About to do a valve cover gasket job so intake resonator, tubes, hoses, etc off. Pretty nasty on the outside and want to clean them up.

scrubbing with throttle body/air intake cleaner a decent idea?

Simple green and a hose will probably work pretty well for those air ducts. Might be difficult to fully dry out that resonator though.

For the TB cleaning, make sure you take the tps and the iac solenoid off. I ruined my tps by leaving it on and spraying cleaner in there.

Nice and shiny. I just replaced all of the vacuum lines. Nothing was broken, but they were starting to dry out.

I’d clean the plenum as well as the EGR port to it. And that would be down stream of TB.

    If it’ll help:

And reason I mentioned EGR is that I found the port into the intake on my 3RZ @150k was half carboned. Hole opening was about 3/8” with band of carbon about 1/4” thick around it, half clogging it. Was gunked throughout plenum but more like that oily black gunk in TB. EGR affects temps, per old silver can contribute to head gasket failure.

appreciate it - my entire plenum is clean as far as I could reach, brand new TB assembly (TPS, IAC, etc). No issues there and engine runs great, just don’t like how this intake tube is nasty.

sprayed out air box without MAF in - apparently a lot of that tubing is discontinued now by Toyota. Lame!

I honestly should have taken the runner off when I did installed new throttle body, but it didn't look bad from what I could see. Have you by chance cleaned any of the intake tubes/assembly down to air box? Trying to figure out the best way to clean it without it leaving residue on the inside. Outside was easy with a little 3m adhesive remover + soft wire (plastic) brush

I washed inside/outside down with hose and simple green
While still damp…..wiped with cloth/rag and flathead (to get all nooks/crannies)

let sun dry (I moved to diff work location on the engine.

this is just me but b4 reinstalling airbox/tubes…..sprayed with Black Magic (silicone spray)

You prolly already got started, but usually when I'm cleaning things I don't want to damage, I'll start with something mild like dish soap and work my way up until I get what I'm after. Simple green is safe for most everything but you don't want to let aluminum soak in it too long. Same goes for pretty much any degreaser. For rubber I found that orange cleaner can get it looking black again.

I try to stay away from the products you find on the shelves at autozone. If you do a little research you'll find the active ingredients are common things that don't cost very much. For example, brake clean is basically acetone. Another thing that is relatively safe for most things is mineral spirits. MS is great because it doesn't evaporate like acetone or eat at plastic parts. It's great for dissolving combustion related residues like you'll find in the intake and EGR. Soak a rag and apply it generously and then use a nylon bristle brush on plastic parts to break off the heavy stuff. Then go back over it with a clean soaked rag. Then use orange cleaner or simple green to wash away all the residue and rinse. Dry with a fluffy towel or it won't look clean. Then apply a treatment to beautify if you like. Silicone, or armor all or whatever.

The rubber hoses you see on my oil cooler were a nasty tan color and caked with crap from running right under that exhaust manifold. I spent about 10 minutes sitting in a chair with DEP orange cleaner and a couple shop towels scrubbing until everything was gone and this is how it turned out. The dull spots are where something had rubbed and left marks that cannot be fixed, but they're clean.

That's actually exactly what I did with a nylon bristle! Might go grab a bucket and soak them in it WHILE I scrub, then dry off and coat with silicone as stated. First hose took way to long and not super clean because of the ridges in the design

Trick is knowing what it is your trying to dissolve and then knowing chemically what dissolves that particular thing. Any monkey can scrub something clean.
