You need to reread the above answers. They are quite clear on operation.

you’re not going to get a straight answer because there really isn’t one. It’s yes and no. If the battery is charged at a level that’s sufficient enough, it could turn off the engine while you’re stopped. However if you need a charge or there is a heavy load they will keep it running because of the demand. That’s because the system is setup and programmed differently (but also similarly) than normal auto start/stop.

Far as I know all hybrids have the same start stop feature as the gas only trucks and there is no way to disable it. Like some gas trucks have a start stop cancel button.

I have read that tow haul and maybe another drive mode selection will disable start stop. Whether or not that was only gas trucks and not hybrids. That might have been the Tundra and not the Tacoma.

The gas engine will shut off before you stop. It will start back up after you are going, not when you release the pedal.

Yes thank you. Lots of confusion here because some people are talking about the electric motor turning on when the gas motor shuts off and that’s not what I was looking for.

Thanks for the reply I wonder what the logic behind this. In any case I prefer my hybrid truck not to have the auto start stop feature.

A major advantage of hybrid vehicles is that they use electric motors to motivate the vehicle from a stop. This greatly reduces unnecessary engine idling and is part and parcel of a hybrid power train. The transition from electric to ICE is basically seamless. That said, you may be able to "defeat" this by driving the vehicle exclusively in S mode, or so I recall someone on TW mentioning.

It reduces unnecessary idling and saves fuel.

I know why the feature exist. I didnt understand why his SR5 RWD had the start/stop feature when others were saying only the limited trim has it and others still saying all hybrid have it.

If you are focused exclusively about whether the gas engine ever turns off when you come to a temporary stop while driving, the answer is yes (and there's no button to disable it but there are some other actions the driver can take that essentially disable it). I asked a few questions along this line several months ago; maybe reviewing those responses will help. See posts 167-173 here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/posts/30254481/

If your concern about the auto start/stop is that it isn't a smooth transition, don't worry. Because the transition occurs with the electric motor moving the vehicle it is much smoother. You do not get the golf cart lurch of the ICE only (internal combustion engine) turning on when you hit the gas.

So this is my first hybrid vehicle. During my hybrid test drive at the dealer I did not experience any of the stop and start of the gas engine or the electric motor and that is why I was confused. Now reading further with ingot's link above I am clear now that the electric motor kicks on during slow or stops and transitions to gas motor as the speed increases. I was under the impression that the truck would shut the engine off abruptly ( NO Electric or gas motor is on ) and it would start the gas engine again when I let off the gas, like traditional gas engines.

I think when asking about the auto start/stop, we need to separate the hybrids from the non-hybrids. Two separate systems. Two different answers. The non-Hybrids that shut off at a stoplight are annoying and I understand why the OP asked the question - Toyota should be clear on which non-hybrid models comes with that undesirable "feature". I'm very glad my '24 SR5 4x4 doesn't have it. I once had a Chevy half-ton that did it, and I'd typically forget to turn off the override button until I got to the first stoplight on my commute, and the silly truck would shut off. I used that override button every drive.

Separately, Hybrids are more complicated as to when they shut off the gas engine, as stated in some of the answers already given. Based on battery level, load on the system (like full hot defrost on a frozen morning), etc. My wife's HiHy (Highlander Hybrid) runs the gas engine when its needed. Sometimes that's at a stoplight while stopped. The way the hybrid works on the Tacoma seems like their gas engines run more than the equivalent system in the Highlander. No override button on any Hybrid model that I've seen from any manufacturer.

The non-hybrids with auto stop/start have an always on cancel feature. Don't push the brake pedal firmly when coming to a complete stop and the engine will keep running. You'll get a "press brake firmly to activate" warning on the dash that you can ignore.
