honestly the biggest issue with the snap is just shit tires. tires have gotten so much better over the last 30 years that you REALLY have to try even without the geometry correction

I'll get in one more order today or tonight. I know it takes a while for them work fulfill the huge rush of orders. If I need it low cost and fast, I'll go to Dubai.
The stuff I've been buying from Decatur has been heavy items where large shipping charges being free makes a big price difference.

I'm just thankful that Toyota sanctioned a 25% off sale + the regular 23% off a discounters instead of going up. Some if my work suppliers are going up 30% at the end of the month.

Toyota may go up next month, but I'll find a way around it.

One of my buddies, SAS'd his Taco and installed a SBC. He didn't like the way it handled. Now he is a IFS 3rd gen 4Runner with a 2UZ that he loves.

Now imagine, you grow up only to realize that your parents whored you out to the internet and you've become a meme for how you look. This poor kid is either going to grow up really self-confident and determined or a disaster.

I hear owners love the big greenhouse for visibility. Like all Land Cruisers since the 80 series, it has the golden wheelbase at 112.2 inches. I've found that to be the perfect size for washouts my local area and descending the steps on Black Bear Pass.

I was today years old when I learned about the Hyatt/Regency hotel walkway collapse disaster of 1980. 114 people killed in a pancake collapse of 2 huge overhanging walkways during a party in the hotel, 30+ were literally pancaked by over 64,000 lbs of steel and concrete. Rescuers described the scene as wading through several inches of blood and water, body parts and corpses split in half and folded like pretzels....holy fucking shit

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyatt_Regency_walkway_collapse

in case you needed something to think about next time you're on a walkway of some kind

Wow, that's uh, bad. That's the stuff we learn from at least though... and the stuff China ignores and continues to do in the name of cheapness and expedience.

Yeahhh kinda makes you realize how much we take for granted the level of trust we implicitly place into the hands of corporate entities and their contractors to do the "right thing". The Hyatt disaster was found to have been inevitable by design and how shoddily it was built just sped that up. But it is true, at least to some degree we tend to learn from such events here at least.

Whenever I'm waiting to enter the freeway from the underpass I slowly creep forward so as not to be under the freeway just in case. The line to wait is far enough for 1 and a half cars to be free from splat.

Yeah same here, I was 8 years old when the Northridge earthquake hit LA in 1994 and my family and I were staying at a hotel just a mile away from where the 14 and 5 freeway interchange is down here, just north of the epicenter. It completely pancaked one freeway on top of the other and killed a motorcycle cop that was driving over it. Anyway I remember seeing it and to this day I think of that every time I'm stuck under a freeway overpass or bridge.

Spokane is an old rail town... so naturally lots of bridges over the river and over the railyards and train tracks... Some of them look less stout than others these days and I wouldn't hang out under them anymore.

Years ago, I read a book that went into that, and other high-profile failures, from an engineering perspective. It didn't dwell on the gory details of body parts though.

    https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/271495.To_Engineer_Is_Human

It was a long time ago that I read it, but I think the gist was: Engineering is a balance between knowns and unknowns. No major structure is exactly the same as any other major structure, so there are always unknowns, and human creativity compounds that (we could build entire towns of nearly-identical buildings but we'd prefer not to). The more unknowns you try to account for, the greater the cost, so somewhere there's a balance between "known enough" and "cheap enough" that needs to be maintained. That balance can't be recognized without some amount of failure.

I'm not sure, but I think the book or author might be where I got the idea that "optimization is the pursuit of not quite failing". In other words, the most resource-efficient solution to a problem will generally have the smallest margin of error before failure.

The book (published in the 80s) also had some interesting thoughts on the role of computers in design and engineering. Computers can be a force multiplier in the hands of a skilled user, but they can also amplify the mistakes of an unskilled user by giving false confidence or making it easy to do things that would "smell funny" if drawn or modeled using more traditional means. We're facing that exact problem anew as we contemplate what AI is or isn't good for.
