RLx02's ‘17 TRD-OR on 37s and 5.29s

It’s been a while since I had any updates. Been out on several trips but no new mods to the truck because I picked this up a while back and slowly trying to restore it and do a 2GR engine swap.

 

However 37s are officially on the plate (37/12.5/17 Patagonia XT) and I’m starting to cut the fenders even more to get these mounted on in order to mall crawl before tubbing the fenders.

 

Would you recommend 4.88 if you were to stay at 35s or 5.29s all the way? I am planning to regear currently on 295/70/17 and only plan on going up to 35s. Would u say 4.88 or 5.29?

 

5.29 all the way. Some people with heavy builds are even running 5.29s on 33s. The 6speed auto is really more like a 4speed with 2 overdrives that become useless once you go uphill or add weight and bigger tires. I can actually use 6th on the freeway normally and get good gas mileage if I keep it 65mph and under. Over 65 and it plummets but still not as bad as a 2nd gen on 35s.

 

The ass pain required to running 37s properly without long travel:

Check for clearance lock to lock with bumpstops fully compressed. Mark areas that rub. Cut said areas. Check for clearance again. Cut new areas that rub. Repeat process ad nauseam until you fully clear or say fuck it good enough.








Create templates for the gaps.
Create fill plates for gaps.
Weld, or hire a monkey to weld to new plates without burning the truck down.



Relocate washer fluid reservoir and possibly battery.



Seam seal and paint everything inside and out.



Stare at the fruits of your labor and immediately want to go to 40s.

Even the 35s on my 4runner look tiny.

 

Yeah, mine never felt like I really had 35s lol. Maybe because I only have like a 2” lift, who knows.

 

Had a hard hit on last summer’s trip and flattened out my cam tab and threw my alignment off the whole trip. Looked into just welding a bead behind the tab, cam eliminator kits or just the gusset kit but ended up buying the MC LCA frame brace kit from a member here (can’t remember who it was) locally. MC says no modifications required but it definitely did not fit in some places without grinding some parts down. I’d give 7/10.






Used some hardware to keep the lca mounts in place when welding it up. I think the directions say to leave the LCA in and put a wet towel over it but didn’t want to risk burning the bushings.



Annoyingly, you will need to notch out a section of your LCA brace/skid if you want full droop (without your coilovers in) too. Some long travel guys were modding their LCAs instead as well I think.
