Yeah I put the aluminum filter housing on a couple years ago without issue. Sounds like OP screwed up and wants to blame the parts

It's not until the tabs break and you are forced to remove it with any means necessary

if you broke the tabs, you used the wrong tool.

Yep, the tool that grabs the tabs breaks the tabs..
Don't use the tool that grabs the tabs, and I don't see how a tabs will get broken.

Don't get me wrong, I do, have, and forever will, prefer a spin on filter, but the oil change problems with the cartridge system are perpetuated by those that turn the wrench..

I went this far. I need to know what caused the tsunami of oil.

So it's not the filter assembly o-rings, and it's not the installer.

Does that mean it's planetary alignment, or solar flares?

When reading all these oil change stories on TW, oftentimes I feel more sorry for the vehicle than the owner

I torque everything properly and never had a problem with a plastic filter housing off in 11 years (since getting my wife's 2014 Corolla).

I did have trouble getting the housing off after my dealer did a free oil change. After that is when I discovered Free is not always a good price

I live on a low traffic residential street. When I change my oil in the street I leave fewer stains than my neighbor's junker work van.

I do change the filter housing drain plug O-ring about every second or third oil change. Just don't want to leave the old O-ring on forever.

You only have to be 3% smarter than the filter housing to sucessfully change oil on a 3.5

I change it every time only because a new one comes with every time.

I've debated keeping the old one on, but having to remember which time I changed it last gives me PTSD of navigating VCR clock menus for daylight savings time.

I would argue I'm less than that.

But between a fumoto valve and the motivx kit, I don't even bother using cardboard or oil dry like I used to. It's almost enjoyable.

Sorry to those with oil dry stocks. These changes have absolutely created a negative return on your investment.

I've few Toyota oil filter wrenches over the years, but his no-name el-cheapo cast aluminum one has always been my go to for 10+ years.

After the first time using it, I chucked it on the lathe, turned the ear popper off, it never failed me.

Two of my favorite quotes to use in some situations is, "You need to be 10% smarter than the tool you are using". And... "Dumbest smart person I know". Ski

If you continue to do your own oil changes the Moitvx Tool will be your best investment. It works flawlessly. I get it, it's one of those tools you don't want to buy or admit that you need. Just drop some hints for fathers day, birthday or arbor day, whatever day works for you. The first time you use it you'll see why it's so liked. It even comes well packaged in a foam lined box with specific spots for each tool. If you're into packaging, you'll appreciate it.
I've had mine since 2022, zero issues. It's paid for itself over and over.

Well since we are throwing quotes out. My favorite garage quote is

" a good craftsman never complains about his tools".

Let that one sink in for a little, you'll understand it past the surface meaning.

    This. I was one.

Why the @#$!! should I buy a whole extra kit just for an oil change?!??

Then I changed my own oil in my (at the time) stock 2020 DCLB.
Change your own oil in your 3rd gen Taco?
    Get the MotivX kit.

Nobody has to pay for that much money for something they can get for 15 bucks. The funnel is free, the oil filter kit already comes with a drain. Any 64mm/14 flat filter wrench would work.
