Coronado went that way almost 500 years ago.
The Spaniards didn't know how far it stretched and there was no water, no landmarks... at all.
It was a leap into the unknown.
They drove stakes into the ground every so often so they could retrace their steps if it came to that.
So it's called the Llanos Estacados (Staked Plains).

 

I missed it the last time I came through.

 

We're in a big bowl. If I got on the roof and took a 360 you'd see mountains almost all around us.

The mountain range and stretch of river back there is mostly closed off this time of year for elk migrations.

 

Sounds like an outdoorsman’s paradise.

Yep but it can be a little weird to show up to a fishing access and have signs like hey you can't fish here between 2-7pm cause of owls (or other random animal).

Flathead Lake holds huge fishing competitions and is gorgeous though I still haven't gotten a chance to actually swim in it cause it's always cold. The river is better swimming anyway cause it's less people.

Easier to get up on the shop roof though cause the backside is only 5ft up.

I am quasi scared of heights though so don't expect me to sit on the edge or nothing.
