Without a camera recording the incident, what you are trying to do will not change the outcome. Check the houses around to see if they have doorbell cameras that might have recorded it. Beyond that, pics from the internet of low speed damage won't do anything for you.

There's a few problems here and there's always more to the story.

As someone who has seen many crashes, I can absolutely see how the tickets issued were written. Modern cars are indeed designed to crumple, especially in the front end. That being said, the side of vehicles don't tend to get that much damage, especially in a "8-15 MPH" crash. I've seen crashes at much higher speeds not cause anyone to go to the hospital, let alone have the door frame/trim bend like that. And no, airbags don't always deploy at low speed crashes, even in 25-35 MPH examples. It depends on a lot of factors.

Also I don't know how the ticket was written but here in Michigan there's a such thing as fail to yield from a stop sign. It doesn't mean you didn't stop but it does mean you didn't yield and it falls under the same statute.

As for Life360, GPS isn't always accurate down to the foot, especially at low speeds or in areas with tree coverage. Hell I've seen data from dedicated GPS watches bounce around while standing still. I've also ridden my bike for several feet (more than the distance of a normal intersection) while the GPS had yet to register that I was moving at all. Without seeing the data you have, it is entirely possible that Life360 showed your son as stopped because of that interference and/or the crash itself.

Also, I'm not trying to be rude but I would also like to add that I was always taught to drive defensively. If your son was truly at a complete stop and this couple ran the other stop sign (especially at the "20 MPH" you suspected), any driver (even at 18) would see that they're not going to make that stop. Why would he continue forward at that point? Unless he's hammering the gas, the amount of damage to both vehicles doesn't add up if your son was coming from a complete stop. Especially considering the damage to the other vehicle is on the passenger side as it is. We're not talking about visualizing walking speeds here. We're talking about an NFL running back at full stride but in a 3,000lb vehicle.

The Taco T-boned the Honda dead center. The Honda had to be IN the intersection, not entering, for that to occur. I side with the cop.

I've also noticed that certain programs will also make "educated assumptions" on local conditions and averages to work out inconsistent gps pings(ie, most traffic does ____ here, no gps data to confirm, program assumes I do as well). My experience with that is specifically in Google maps, where it will just assume I traveled 'x' distance, or made a turn already based on time estimates when gps data was unavailable due to building coverage.

I don't know enough about the backend software behind life360, but I do know a few families that also use it and occasionally experience some really erratic data that makes for fun dinner table commentary.

    Facebook mentality.

But it really shouldn't be shocking. They put an 18 year old driver into a 2 year old $45k vehicle. While there are 18 year olds that work their tails off to get there, statistically speaking it's very rare. But if the parents are willing to dump $45k and insurance into their kid like that, again, statistically, the level of entitlement of both the kids and the parents shoots to stratospheric levels.

It's a vicious cycle. Like a snake eating it's tail.

    Maybe very different areas.

But of note, in the first post. They indicated " his truck", not " he was driving my truck/my husband's truck"

Only very rich well-off families around my area would ever do such a crazy thing. Most in my area wouldn't hand over the keys to any vehicle worth more than $5-8k max to a 18 yo driver. The idea is that it will be wrecked, and better wreck something cheap. Not a matter of if, but when. It's exactly why younger drivers cost so much to insure.

Within the first three years of driving, roughly 43% of first-year drivers and 37% of second-year drivers are involved in car crashes.

Looks more like a 20-30mph hit. The honda will save everything from the time of airbag deployment.

Speed, brake and throttle input, steering wheel angle etc. I've had the forensic guys come by the shop and pull data from wrecked cars, they also photo them and take measurements.

Good luck, I'd probably delete this thread and keep it off the internet. Never know how things will go.

Yeah. GPS devices for physical activities often have some sort of coding as well to account for things such as repeated GPS loss (like with swimming), or hand movement, like with running. After all, GPS devices are nothing more than a device that sends signals out to satellites and measures the time it takes to send/receive and triangulates it to get an approximate location. The more satellites the better but you never know how many you're reaching at any one time.

An Event Data Recorder (EDR) is an onboard device that receives information from these computers and records that information received several seconds before and/or a fraction of a second after a crash or near-crash situation. The data is intended to help understand how a vehicle's various systems functioned in a crash. The EDR is contained in the Supplemental Restraint System airbag Electronic Control Unit.
