Oil Change from Hell

As quoted, each to their own, it worked absolutely flawlessly for me

 

I use Costco full synthetic 2 pack 5qt jugs, similar issue with you when the truck is on jack stands and I'm holding a jug tip toe trying not to spill.

 

When I did my first oil change on the tacoma the most difficult part was removing the plastic filter housing…..and with the RCI skid plate removed.

I had to get a wrench on the filter tool nut because the 3/8” socket drive wasn’t going to work….it was retard tight.

For me the filter wrench and drain setup was worth that kit, the funnel is the weakest part not being vertical.
That filter wrench was essential to get the plastic housing off and I’m hesitant to have to have that happen again.

Only other thing I can think of is maybe the dealer never charged the filter when I was going for the free ones??
The housing is tightened to where you put the clip on it, so it’s the same stopping point every time, don’t see how it’s an over-torqued thing.

 

Nothing worse than getting oil on your sleeve. Good grief, this forum…

Are you serious ? I ruined a perfectly good long sleeve tee not mention getting oil all over my Race Deck Floor!
But in all seriousness I am greatly entertained by;
1.) the smug ass folks that act like they have never screwed up a simple task.
2.) and all the special contraptions and and the lengths some people go to to do an oil change - I say cool go for it.

Hey, I have been doing oil changes for ever and it's no big deal. Do I get a little oil on my hand when I remove the oil pan plug . . . yes a little. Do I get a little more when I remove the oil filter housing . . . . some, but not much really. Do I have any problem at all with re-filling the oil using a simple funnel . . . . none. Did I mistakenly try and install a metal filter housing for a lexus or some other Toyota model . . . . probably.

 

I did one the other day and I’ve done them many times. I finally will try putting my finger over the drain hole when pushing in the filter purge/drain piece. I guess it depends on how “worn” the drain on the filter housing is. My friends 2016 is much easier to do an oil change at this part compared to my 2022. I have to use vice grips in order to pull the plastic out once it’s drained since it’s so tight.

The Motivx makes life really simple for people who are new to oil changes. Definitely a worthwhile product for some people. Personally don't see any issues with cheaper options if you know how to use them properly and have spent enough years making messes to have good practices and know what to expect.

I personally don't understand the hate for the little free plastic drain tools. I don't even bother with a tube just put a drain pan under it then pop it in with my fingers on the sides. Zero mess.

My cheap filter wrench tool works fine. The people who seem to break them generally try to put a socket extension in it and use it to remove the filter. The socket extension hole is only supposed to be used for tightening with a torque wrench. You need a large socket to go over the tool to use it for tightening. The same goes for the motivx tool but it probably comes with instructions.

As far as funnels I have several cheap non screw in that sit in the oil inlet just fine and let me easily pour in oil. Not a big deal. But again experience matters. Ive made lots of messes over the years. The Tacoma is much easier than many other vehicles to do cleanly.

I've learned some things from Chloe. She doesn't use the Fumoto but goes over the MotivX tool kit.

She makes a mess with the oil plug removal.

I use Havoline because it works, comes in that convenient 6 qt box and is priced very nicely. Unfortunately I'm coming up on my next change and looks like it's been out of stock for some time. Appears to be a Havoline/Walmart only product.

This was the $7 filter wrench I bought many years ago. I believe the spec is 64.5mm, just a hair bigger than most, never got the filter cap stuck on it, plastic or aluminum.

You can use a 3/8" drive ratchet, or like me, use a 26mm socket to turn it.

 

That's unfortunate that it's been out of stock...and yes, it seems you can only buy it from Walmart.

I bought 2 last year, since it's only available online. It will be time for another oil change here shortly.

Costco Kirkland full synthetic(made by Hilghline Warren) is still cheaper at $3.5/qt. Too bad they used to run sales at $2.5/qt, haven't had it for 2 years.

try having a 2nd gen Pelfreybilt aluminum * (Thank God) skid plate that I have to remove completely to get the filter off during my driveway oil changes

 

Same here and I put on the fumoto valve so it's super easy to drain and the full skid covers it all.
How do you measure it out, I’ve been using a mobil1 quart bottle and have spazzed out and spilled filling that!


The filter is still a slight pita working through the acces panel in the RCI skid.
