Honest Discussion: Do You Regret Moving to The 4th Gen?

Coming from a gen2 Tundra. I do miss the V8 rumble with the DirtyDeeds exhaust!! Dropped 4 cylinders added a Turbo and the Power feels the same, except from a dead stop the turbo lags a little off the line. The Tacoma drive train is finally impressive out of the box!

After 16,000 miles and about 4-5K on shitty gravel roads the Tacoma is still rattle free, and feels more nimble and just as rugged as the Tundra did. The factory steel skid on my Tundra bent easily and were replaced with RCI skids, the Tacoma’s plastic skid didn’t fool me, and were replaced before testing them.

Mods? Yeah the entire bumper cover needs removed for grill and lighting changes but it’s really pretty simple, took just under 2 hrs to swap fog lights. But I replaced my rear springs in about 45 mins! And the option of having 3-4 pre wired AUX switches simplifies things considerably.

My biggest complaints are why Toyota didn’t use more soft touch materials on the door panels on other than halo/limited trims? The same diff needle bearing! And the softest plastic known to man for the instrument display!

    No regrets.

No regrets at all… I went from a 22 ORSB 4x4 to the 24 ORLB 4x4. I really appreciate the responsiveness, improved ride quality, technological improvements and how much better the truck looks.

Didn't own a previous gen taco, but drove one. No regrets going with a 2024- it's a meaningful upgrade over the previous gen. My only real complaint is the gas tank is a bit small. Obviously long term reliability is still TBD, but such is life with any new major update.

Not sure why everyone complains about it "only being a 4cyl". Not like the V6 was a power monster.

Yeah I’m never buying a 3rd Gen, to many guys say I love how it looks but the engine transmission suck.

No ragrets at all. If you’re day to day driving, there is no comparison in the comfort, driveability and features.

If you wanted a TRD PRO grille, you should have bought a TRD Pro...

I think he meant Heritage grille, which is essentially a throwback to the days of that style. You know, nostalgia…….

I upgraded from my 23 OR to my 24OR mainly for better towing. I like the 24 much better. Yeah - more soft touch would be better and not having to buy a whole package just to get a brake controller would’ve reduced my cost. But I have to say I use and like the tech features included. Nicest vehicle I’ve ever had.

Coming from a first gen, this thing is half spaceship, half Cadillac. Zero regrets

I love the implication from posts like these that everyone with a new vehicle is financially stupid or somehow beneath those with older trucks:rolleyes:

I can't imagine driving a 4G is that much different than driving a 3G or any other midsize truck. There's about 20 years between design innovation and technology but that's the only real difference.

Is the tailpipe exhaust exit on the driver side a throwback to the pre-taco days?

I drove a 2nd gen 2009 for 200,000 miles and just got a 2025 trd offroad dclb and I LOVE it. I have zero regrets getting rid of the old truck. I am not a DIY auto repair guy and I keep my vehicles pretty much stock. I like the computers and screens. I bought the 09 for $30k in 2008 and sold it last month for $9k. I feel like Dave Ramsay would be mostly OK with me buying the 2025. I delayed the instant gratification of buying a new vehicle for the past decade while I paid off my house. I did take out a loan on the new truck (sorry Dave) but without a mortgage payment it'll be paid off in a year or 2.

The only guilt I feel is that now my wife is driving what feels like an old Sienna (2015) and I wish she had the newest tech and safety features.

I'm sure you can feel the gerational differences and there's probably the biggest difference between gens of Tacomas. Factor in the hybrid and yeah it's a different truck than the 3G. It's still a midsize and the driving dynamics aren't going leaps and bounds apart from one another. Maybe if 1 of the 10 or so dealers near me get an Xtracab in that I'd want I could drive one, Toyota isn't doing a good job getting its product to the consumer.

I had three Gen3’s that I loved dearly and still have serious respect for, but aside from some questionable plastics on the doors, this truck is better assembled, better driving, safer, and an exponentially more robust truck platform. And I definitely would not bet against its long-term reliability if serviced properly. There’s always exceptions, but most people who buy the new one, like it a lot.

Worth noting that in 2016 (when I bought my first), the level of Gen3 hate coming from Gen2 owners combined with complaints from newly-minted Gen3 owners here was beyond toxic levels, and far greater than what we see towards Gen4 now.

The 4th gen is the only one I've personally owned. However, I frequently drive 2nd and 3rd gens at work (and the occasional 1st gen), pre and post repair and I have to say, I love my 4th gen compared to them. If given the choice, I'd take the 4th gen any day.

I’ll add to this, my 23’ Lexus IS500 is the F-sport Performance premium trim, the top of the line model offered by Lexus and I have the original sticker. It MSRP-ed at just under $70k and obviously being a Japanese Tahara plant built Lexus product there are zero compromises on build quality. It has that felt-ish material for wheel well liners and I’ve had no issues with it. When I wash the car is simply get in there with the pressure washer and it sprays off completely clean with no scrubbing, it’s very easy to care for.

I don't regret the change, but there are a few things I miss about my 3rd gen that is different in the 4th gen.

    - turn radius is worse.
    - less overall squeaks and rattles on the 3rd gen.
    - v6 sound. I really liked how the 3rd gen sound. Both motor and exhaust note.
    - bigger sliding rear window

Well this is my 6th Tacoma last one was an 18 Pro. The 4th gen to me seems a bit bigger not sure if that's a good thing or bad. It does drive much nicer then any of my previous Tacoma's. Yes it sounds a bit like a farm tractor or a diesel how ever you see it. I guess no one can say how reliable they are but same as the 3.5 the 2.4t is in a lot of other models. I have just hit 36k km on my manual. My Pro was Calvary blue and this is white. I took the stock ppf off the rear fenders and went about 6-8" higher then stock but even still I have a whack of chips and knicks. I think my next one will be silver.. Yes I would buy again in a heart beat if something were to happen or when I hit about 125-150k km

I regret trading my ‘08 with just shy of 135k on it for a third gen because I feel the engine is better . And I know I’m off topic but I couldn’t help it
