Hold up I have not heard of a catch can freezing and causing a valve cover leak. Has anyone else heard of this? I live in MN and we get weeks of sub zero temps and I wouldn't want to risk it blowing up my engine but I do want to get rid of the oil in the intake.

Wow, would that serve another purpose too? Route hose under truck for mock catch can AND coat frame with oil to prevent frame rust?

If you have the money, just get one. It only offers benefits, even if those benefits are very small. I personally run one just to help keep my valves cleaner.

Wonder how the previous 3 all with over 300,000 miles on them and the new one with only 160,000 never needed one up here in Maine?

I never said you need one, I said it can’t hurt. It only offers small benefits no matter how small these benefits are. It’s like changing your oil every 5k miles vs every 7.5k miles. It’s not necessary, it offers slight benefits and definitely won’t hurt. It’s one of those “why not” when it costs less than a tank of gas.

Who wants this going into their intake? That's proof it's not nothing but it's also not a huge amount over time.

Exactly. Bottom line is, though not necessary, it IS better for your motor to have a catch can.

Oil and contaminants evaporate out of the crank case vent (pcv valve) and is usually sent into the intake of the motor to get burned off. This, over time, leads to a build up of deposits on your intake valves. Now you should be routinely cleaning your Tacoma’s intake valves/combustion chamber due to the direct injection engine anyways, but an oil catch can helps to keep your intake and cylinders cleaner. It slows the wear of the motor, and even helps the motor run a bit more efficiently, though in a Tacoma the effect is pretty minimal.

2gr-fks is not full time Direct injection engine.
It runs on Direct injection when the engine load reaches 75% and above.

Yup, but carbon still builds up, whether direct or port or both. So it’s good practice to run an intake-valve/combustion chamber cleaner every 50k miles. An oil catch-can also helps slow gunk buildup since any amount of oil burning in your motor leaves deposits over time too.

Judging by pics posted here showing state of valves after years of ownership, the issue is exaggerated.

Im genuinely curious what benefits it offers in an engine with port injection. The gas gets sprayed on intake valves thus keeping them clean.

I havent seen one complaint or issue with carbon build on valves on 2GR-FKS.

Fun fact, i get the same amount of oil vapor NA as i do Supercharged. Sign of a healthy engine.

This is my philosophy as well. I have a ford with a 2.3 turbo ecoboost that is only direct injection, and I run an aftermarket catch can on it, so I am a believer in catch cans, that said, I've never once contemplated putting one on my Tacoma for the exact reason you stated above.

DI/Boosted a catch can is a great idea. We are pretty dry in CO, so there won't be a lot of moisture in the catch can.

I have two on my Mustang. Dirty/Clean side. Not all "catch cans" are created equal either.IMG_7339.jpg IMG_7341.jpg

200 miles there is about a tablespoon of 5W-50.

    IMG_7340.jpg

The clean side doesn't get bad unless the car is pushed hard.

With all the other hoses and BS....can't even tell I have two.
