Honest Discussion: Do You Regret Moving to The 4th Gen?

Was the old slider larger? I know the new slider looks smaller the rear window also grew in size. Has anyone measured both rear sliding window openings?

 

I’ve owned 2nd, 3rd and now a 4th gen Tacoma. They all ride like Tacoma’s, get shit gas mileage and are way too expensive. The 4th gen definitely has the best feeling powertrain, and the interior and modern technology are awesome. I have no regrets about getting a 4th gen.

Coming from a 2021 OR, I find the 4G OR iForceMax superior in all the things you mention. I am surprised you did not mention the 14" screen bolted to the dash. That would be my noted design issue. I think Toyota could have done a much better job integrating that screen into the dash. My niece, who owns a Chevy Bolt, and familiar with all things electronic screen, wryly commented as she sat down in my Tacoma, "You got an ipad with your new truck!"

That said, I miss my 1st gen 1997 Tacoma with the TRD supercharger. I know it was old school compared to today's tech, but there was something very satisfying running through the manual gears approaching red line with that combo of the 5VZ-FE V6 and the supercharger.

 

It is smaller. The overall window grew in size, but the slider opening is smaller.

3rd Gen just looks way better.

 

The window looks smaller. I think it's smaller it probably is smaller. I'm not 100% sure the opening is smaller with out measurements. There was some horizontal over lap on the old window at least on the 2G there was about an inch or two on the passenger side where slider only goes so far. Maybe the vertical opening shrunk but there's so much more glass is it an illusion?

 

Let’s say the window is a full inch smaller. How does that make a difference? Not like you can crawl through either one. I can still easily throw my empty beer cans into the bed.

 

There is no such overlap on the 3rd gen window. the slider opens pretty much as big as that rectangle you see.

It's not a huge deal, but my kids like the window open with the sunroof open, and creates a nice open cabin with air going through it. When they got in the new truck, the first thing they mentioned is why the rear window is so much smaller.

 

I'm indifferent on both. I've owned the 3rd gen since 2016 when they came out. I bought 2 of them. After 10 years, I was ready for something new.

 

3G power slider might be different than the manual sider if 3G was offered with a manual slider.

The window does look snaller to me but with out measurements to prove that I'm going with they are the same size opening. Lots of 3 & 4G trucks around with sliders to prove one way or the other.

If people want a full Tundra roll down rear window on a Tacoma they can opt for the 4Runner.

I know you think that and I believe the opening is smaller but by how much? If the dimensions of both 24 and 23 rear slider openings are recorded that would settle it.

Almost 2 years later and I haven't seen the measurements. I'm thinking the difference is in mm or cm that's if the new window opening is smaller.

probably no one care enough to measure. All I know is I bought the 4th gen, noted the smaller rear window and moved on. At no point did I want to measure both to see exactly 'how much smaller' lol

 

Just to put this to bed, I went ahead and measured my 4th gen and found the 3rd gen specs.

4th gen rear window opening = 11.5" x 7"
3rd gen rear window opening = 11.5" x 11.25"

 

That’s no bigger than a womp rat!!!

 

not even a little bit. The interior is better, the looks are better, the power and instant low end torque is so much better than the v6.

Would I have gotten a turbo v6 if Toyota offered it? Sure i will always get the most powerful engine i can. but i really like this powertrain, don't care that its 4cyl. 450lb feet of torque at 1700 rpm is no joke.

 

My silver 2nd gen Taco died of a heart attack on my way home from work Friday. Engine needs replaced to the tune of 14k. I've had that truck paid off for 8 years.

Life moves on just as Taco Gens do, so I pick up my new silver 2025 TRD Off-Road tomorrow after work. I'm back to having a vehicle payment, but that will not be forever.

The awesome part is, with the help of this site and you fine people, I get to upgrade, modify, and style the new Taco to be MY Taco. I'm devouring 4th Gen content here, and my Amazon cart is quickly filling with goodies.
