I think most here can probably agree with @amyracecar
It's a tricky business, encroaching on someone else's autonomy, whether family or not.

My own Father was exceptionally hard headed.
After retirement, he become progressively more... peculiar.
    In small ways at first.
(He eventually passed due to a brain tumor.)

My Mom could handle him and pushed through their move into a retirement home.
No one else could have done it.
Never underestimate the power of a good wife who knows which battles to pick :p
    Anyway...

I may or may knot have told this one before :)

    Story Time with Gritto

When Mrs Gritto and I moved into our present home, 31 years ago, I told her that fifteen Red Oaks had to go.
    She didn't like that idea.
I told her that oaks are bad neighbors when too close to one's house.
They're very heavy and prone to getting blown down.
    Especially on a rocky mountainside.

I was vindicated much later when one I had left standing (because outside of fall distance) came down with an almighty crash during a thunderstorm.
    Boom!
Scared the bejeesus out of her, but I immediately knew what had happened :p

Anyway, I got some climbing spikes and a small 12" chainsaw for working up high.
I already had a 20" chainsaw and rock climbing harness.

Before I could get going on the project, I came home one day to find that my Dad had dropped one of the oaks...
... right spang on the toolshed :annoyed:

I said: "Look, my house, this is gonna get done my way. I'm gonna top 'em first. Easier to control how they fall after that"

So things went swimmingly for awhile.
Dad insisted on helping but I had my eye on him o_O

Then there was a real toughie.
Massive oak leaning towards the house.
I climbed it and tied on a hemp rope as far up as I could go, the other end tied to his 4x4 Isuzu truck.
The plan was to gradually put tension on as I began cutting the top.
Partway through it started to bend backwards and Dad gunned it
I was frantically waving, shouting stop, stop.

Well, the rope snapped just at the moment the top passed vertical.
So it fell as planned instead of on me.
But that tree vibrated violently back and forth like an upside down pendulum, with me clinging for dear life.
    Boing!
I came down and said: "You're fired."

Mrs Gritto saw the whole thing and was ashen faced.
    "Are you okay?"
Me: "Yeah. That's enough for today."

    The End :)
