    Yes, Yes, Yes!

The 1960-66 GM trucks were the best looking trucks of the era in my opinion.

Not bad but 67-72 were the Bomb.

Bought it like that. No rust. Even in the usual places. Overall mint. Needed some cosmetics. The hubcaps and mirrors, horrendous. Had the 327 rebuilt. Had the 3 in the tree. Being young, broke and in between jobs I ended up selling it after 3 years.

We’re getting close to getting a property with similar characteristics. Nearest neighbors at least 1/4 mile in all directions.

I’ve lived in an isolated home before, in what seems to be a different life over 30 years ago with a different partner. My wife hasn’t. She recently started to talk about the isolation, not that we haven’t talked about it before. She shrugged it off but it made me think to ask you, or anyone else here, if there’s any tips or insights that we could consider from a female perspective.

    As always, TIA :hattip:

The neighbor over the hill has one very similar, his father bought it new.

Women often put a priority on feeling secure.

In urban areas having several lock on the door may offer a sense of security but let's be honest here - a $100 cordless saw from The Mart will go through that door in seconds. A large determined guy too.

The sense of security depends on the person, my S-I-L was scared of dogs, snakes, spiders, birds, squirrels, things that go bump in the night, etc - she was very uncomfortable just driving out here in the middle of the day. :goingcrazy:
She could never live out here.

Tough to take a city girl and have her want to live on a dirt road.

For the person with the right attitude, maybe a sense of adventure too, I believe it comes down to being prepared to take care of most things yourself.

A capable vehicle with premium tires.

Enough supplies and resources to handle being off grid due to weather.

Personal protection isn't a bad thing to have around as long as one is trained in proper use.

The power came back on at 4:45, an electric water heater coming to life is a wonderful sound.
    :yay::yay::yay:

The last problem turned out to be somewhere within a mile or two, fortunately further toward the end of the line past us.

The fellows were able to install a switch between the problem side and the "good" side so they can continue to work on it.

Said switch is right where our line branches off so we are actually the last house with power.

As I'm typing I just heard voices on the truck loudspeaker followed by

    :nuclear:

    followed by expressions of surprise...
I guess they haven't got it quite yet. :(

I'm out in my auxiliary chair getting the last of the sun.

Dunno lots depends on your wife. Does she need to be around people all the time? We have neighbors close by but we dont hang out.

Find some hobbies to do. We dont like people much so its nice here. Wish we were further out but this is better than in city. It works for us

Thanks guys!! She’s tough but it’s going to be a unique experience for her.

We’ve talked about a few of the things you mentioned. The house has a security system we’re planning on maintaining and building upon - upgrading in general adding more cameras and features that could be available. I need to do research on the sytem to determine the best way to proceed.

It’s not a situation of not having neighbors near by, it’s more about the level of comfort and security I want to provide for her.

That prior property I had was broken into and I never felt secure in the aftermath in that house. I don’t want to happen to either of us in this new one.

Well I took a girl from the NYC suburbs in CT, and we live 20 minutes from the nearest grocery store and 30 minutes in any direction to be nearest city/town. With that said it took some time for her to get use to it. Now that she is retired that's when we got the Maligator 17423387097573533964444302530139.jpg. I wish you luck but being prepared for power outages and water outages is helpful.
    Best wishes for your endeavor.

    Thanks David!

The people that built this place had an eye for self sufficiency. It’s on the grid but pays pennies (and reportedly even gets some change back) from the power company due to the solar panel grid. It also has a whole house generator for outages run on propane.

After the still unresolved ROW claim we have here, we’re looking forward to some space between us and the neighbors.

We’ll be about the same distance as you to for groceries, local hospital and the conveniences of a small college town. Restaurants are closer by. The biggest lifestyle change we anticipate is the town water/sewer system and having stuff closer by.

A security system & cameras are nice I guess, I see more signs popping up for them all the time.
The problem is just who is it going to alert?

Years ago we had a "town cop", I don't really know what his official title was. He had a 15 year old car with a light on top and his contact number was his home landline phone. When he finally retired (well into his 70's I believe) nobody took on the position. Our "protection" comes from the County Sheriff's office or the State Police both of which are at least 30 miles away -- and they sure ain't highway miles either.

Also ambulance and fire responders comes from volunteers, those folks do a great job but there is no way they can match the response time of on call city services.

    Just more to think about.
