ABS Wheel speed sensor harness repair questions.

So I didn't want to necro the old thread but I have the exact problem as in this thread. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/rear-abs-connector-wires-broken-help-needed.461315/ I had fixed it once using butt connectors and this was fine for a while but eventually the lights came back on. The speedometer was still working however.

So I bought a connector with pigtails, connected it up to the harness with butt connectors again. Plug it in and now all the lights are on and my speedometer is no longer working. Does anyone have thoughts on what I can / should try next I would love to hear it. My next step is going to be to cut out the connections I made in case I got insulation in or something while making the connections.

Also a note, I did NOT try to jump the odb like recommended in the thread because the speedometer is also not working. However if you guys think thats my missing step i'll give it a shot also.

I've broken and repaired my abs wires a few times. Do you have a multimeter and know how to test for continuity? Test continuity on the new and old harness and see if you have any breaks in the wires as they can be fairly fragile.

 

I have one but am a bit meh on using it. I'll find a youtube video i'm sure and start there lol.

 

It's how I learned too, it's pretty easy, you just have to figure out which settings to use on it. Continuity is testing a wire to see if there are any breaks in it or not. So if you hold a multimeter lead to either side of a wire and it beeps at you, there is continuity.

In all the times that I had abs wire issues, it was because there was a break in the wire somewhere and I have had a 100% success rate with figuring that out and fixing it with continuity on a multimeter.

 

Are you sure you didn't get the wires crossed?

 

LOL I'm not positive but pretty sure. I followed the diagram from the other thread and when I pulled the wire from the old connector it _looked_ correct. (note the insulation was mostly gone from the old wiring). I'm going to go through with multimeter tonight and see where I'm losing continuity

 

ok so of the two sets of wires one has power and the other does not. I'm super tempted to just take it in and let them deal with it however I'm pretty sure they quoted me $750 to fix at our local dealer. I Tried to open up the wire loom as far as I could and didn't see any issues but I was running out of lihgt. Guess I'll give it a go tomorrow again one last shot before sucking it up and spending the money such a pain in the ass to take apart the loom under the truck with no lift but saving the money is worth it I suppose.

 

What year is your truck and do you have the vacuum or hydraulic booster, I can grab a wiring diagram for your truck.
I still bet you have wires crossed.

 

2013, you can see the diagram in the other post I linked. I can't have wires crossed, they aren't connected right now and one set (white + black) has no power reading. I get voltage from Tan + Yellow however.

 

It seems they labeled the pins incorrectly on that drawing.

the White wire is Pin 1 Rear Left - and Yellow is Pin 2 Rear Left +

Beige is Pin 3 Rear Right - and Black is Pin 4 Rear Right +

 

Well you are absolutely correct. wired up like above and my abs lights are all off. My TCS light was on but driving down the block it went off on its own. Sorry for doubting you and thanks for the diagram, really appreciate it. Saved me a bunch of money

I’m having a similar problem. 2011 Tacoma TRD Sport DBL Cab 5’ bed. ABS, BRAKE, and Traction Control lights lit up on the dash. Replaced all 4 wheel speed sensors, and reset the OBD2. A day later they all came back on. Reset again, same problem. Changed all 4 sensors, AGAIN, and reset again. Still no change. Checked voltage in all 4 connections, and they’re good - 11.XX. Any ideas on next steps?

 

Have you even checked what code(s) it's setting? There's other things besides wheel speed sensors that can turn the lights on.

 

Yes, scanned it myself and at 2 shops. No codes showing up. Leaving me puzzled.

 

If the lights are on there should be codes present in the ABS module.

A generic OBDII code reader is only gona pull engine codes, most won't read ABS codes. You need a scan tool that can read codes from all systems or at least is capable of reading ABS codes.

Wouldn't hurt to check the brake fluid level as low brake fluid can trigger the lights as well.

That's interesting to have signal malfunction codes for all 4 sensors and signal noise codes for the 2 left sensors and very rare, you said you replaced all of them but what did you replace them with?

Do you still have the originals?

The B codes are SRS (Airbag) codes.
