Last year during the last weekend in July, it was busier than usual. A couple of clubs reorganized and returned to Silverton/Ouray during that week. I went with some long term friends who have been going for over 10 years. So we avoided the crowds. This year I'll be going with one local person do some exploring. This will be my 4th year and know the area between Silverton and Ouray well enough to lead a group.

Last year there were so many that went on Bear Pass that I passed and went home. I actually prefer to drive that one early on a Sunday morning when there are few to no people on it.

I actually perform better when I'm driving solo because I'm not looking at a vehicle in front of me and can better judge the line I need to take.

There is stuff out there, agreed it's not documented well. A lot of it is kept quiet by the local wheeling groups, I ended up joining one to learn where the spots were. This was all on the east side, haven't ventured on the west side of the state much.

Yeah we don't share stuff like that publicly anymore, you meet people and decide if they're trustworthy before continuing to the spot. Publicly known spots just get ruined.

this is part of the appeal for the hard trails, not that they dont get trashed but there is usually a literal gatekeeper that limits it to people who are more invested in protecting the hobby….

I can think of a couple of trails out here that the trailhead location isn't spoken of and if you stumbled across it on your own you might think twice about running the trail because of the gatekeeper boulders and trees. Thing is a lot of the trails here are shrouded by a canopy of trees so you can't even map the direction with satellite easily, you could be getting yourself in for a long hike out around these parts.

Well I’ve got the AAA gold plan. Idk if there’s many off road recovery companies up there though.

What do those look like on OnX? Nondescript forest service road, or entirely nonexistent?

I haven't used OnX. Their youtube marketing hype machine is strong so I'm curious how it lives up.

I try to stay uninvolved with threads like that but I do like to watch.

That truck sure looks like it has a drop-bracket lift. Why isn't anyone pointing that out? Am I crazy?

I haven't used OnX but unless someone plotted the trails I'm thinking of by hand you wouldn't even know enough to plot the coordinates to anything but the start, even the end road is pretty well shaded until it dumps at the far end of a neighborhood.

Guy near my house has an offroad recovery business, Juniors Recovery or something. Nice guy, I like his fleet of old ford wreckers.

I've gathered that OnX pulls from every GIS data source they can get their hands on, so if the USFS or BLM or whoever has mapped the path, they'd scoop it up from there. Sounds like you're talking about purpose-built recreational trails though, not government-sanctioned throughways?

Biggest risk to something like that would be somebody GPS-tracking their drive down it and (possibly unintentionally) uploading it. In that vein, the Strava Heatmap can be used to find unsanctioned hiking/biking paths: http://strava.com/heatmap

Yeah what I'm thinking of are wheeling trails, they're word of mouth, they've never been roads and they're of questionable ownership in various spots.

Sounds nice to live in a place where things like that can still survive.
