So I just changed the oil on my 05 tacoma and found this... Not sure what has happened, truck has close to 70k miles so warranty is out of the question. Any suggestion on what I could do or what it might take to fix?

It's on the drivers side, I think the transfer case?

I drove it today, and have since went and sprayed it down with some purple power then hosed it down at the car wash to see if i can pinpoint exactly where its coming from.

X2 - axle seal. pretty easy fix and cheap. remove axle shaft, remove seal, replace seal, replace axle shaft

    Updated with another picture.

wow, thanks for the fast responses guys! I think I just found my new forum home for my tacoma.

Would any of you be able to point me to some directions for doing this? I would love to do it myself, if I can get the time off work. Or maybe a price something like this would cost?

    Thanks in advance!

I've never done the front axle seals, but I know the seals don't cost very much.

i haven't done a tacoma but plenty of others. you have to get the axle out and sometimes that involves disconnecting the lower ball joint to be able to swing it far enough out of the way. axle needs to come all the way out, then remove the old seal with a seal puller (aka screw driver/pry bar if thats what you have). clean the housing well and gently tap the new seal in place evenly with a block of wood and a hammer (or a seal driver if available). then just replace the axle and tighten everything back up. its very easy once the axle is out...

Looks like the axel seal to me too. BUT, if you have the V6, you may have dripped oil when you removed the filter, and the oil may have found its way down.

Or.... is it the gasket in the diff. In the first pic the red gasket looks a little suspicious to me!! Doesn't look to serious but should be fixed ASAP

I know its not from the oil filter. I will check it out after I drove home from work, since I cleaned everything off.

I have the toytec 3" lift, with the differential drop, any chance that could be any cause for this? I don't really go off road any, and the last time I put it in 4x4 was a few weeks ago when we had ice on the roads.

The lift didnt cause it. If its not the oil from the oil filter, its the axel seal. Ive seen it TOO often.

here it is 25 miles after the drive home from work. I cleaned everything off before. It is definitely the seal. Also I got a quote from the dealer for $390 over the phone... Can't get it in to a local guy until next week. Will it be ok to keep driving? I might see about doing it myself on new years.

called another dealer here and they said they could do it for about $200, almost half of what the other dealer told me. The truck is there now getting fixed. Was kinda dreading doing all that on my one day off.

Are their any guides here for flushing power steering fluid and tranny fluid? I wouldn't mind getting that stuff done.
