Let me this straight, Tacos come stock with cold air intake. So why take that out and install a different cold air intake. I’m not being sarcastic, I want to know the benefit of doing that.

Flashing 3rd brake light, infinity tail lights and Alpha Rex Nova black headlights, Seat covers, Mr. hood scoop with 18 inch amber light bar inside. 2 inch lift front/rear. 1.5 inch wheel spacers. Fender flares,
I installed the K&N "open box" wet oil filter system. I live in the country with dirt roads so I wanted the extra protection. I clean it at every oil change. (5K miles). Is it a little more time consuming than blowing out a dry filter?, yes, but what else do I have to do ?
I bought the unit with the metal intake pipe for better air flow. Like the stock air filter, it terminates near the opening in the fender well where the fresh air intake hole is located. That with my carven exhaust, it really sounds great,

Any thing a person can do to restrict intake or exhaust air turbulence will improve engine performance, Back in the day, engine builds included the porting and polishing the intake and exhaust openings in the cylinder heads for smoother air flow.

Then start with the HPS silicone intake hose if you want more induction volume noise.
I have a Green Filter, HPS intake hose, and I installed the TRD air accelerator ring which quieted the intake nose.
The best bang for the buck is a proper tune.

Anecdotal, but I ran an oiled K&N in my 02 Taco for 200,000 miles. Cleaned it whenever I felt it needed it. Lived on a dirt road. Oil always drained clean. I loved the sound. I don't know about power, because I made a whole bunch of modifications at the same time, but I was very happy with it.

I am thinking about doing something similar to my 21. Already have the Borla exhaust and getting a tune next week - so I'll decide after that. Get what you want!

Snorkel with a snorkel upgrade pre filter. The coldest of air and cooling whistle noises when that pre filter is spun up. And recently tested to not restrict the intake flow at all.

This! Spicy tip-in tune and a snorkel on a factory box and paper filter. I can hear the intake with the windows up.

An oiled air filter can and will work fine with a MAF system as long as you clean and oil the filter correctly. The TRD CAI for our Tacomas come with an oiled filter so even Toyota engineers are fine with it. I’ve never had an issue with the oil causing issues with the MAF on my 3rd Gen with the TRD CAI. You need to not over oil and make sure the oil penetrates the filter material. Then thoroughly blot out the excess. If you have a MAF issue, MAF cleaner makes quick work of it.
