I just don't know if Matthews is mentally built for playoff hockey. He doesn't seem to have that extra gear that players like MacKinnon or Point have in the postseason.

 

He's also broken this year, and I dont think the four nations helped. This is the worst Matthew's we've seen for a long time. He's still good defensively, but that game changing shot hasn't been there this year.

 

So I leave for almost 10 years and you still can't pick a winning hockey team?

I'm not a Toronto fan, but I watch a lot of playoff hockey, and it seems to me that every team's gameplan when facing the leafs (with the exception of Tampa 2 years ago, and we know how that ended) is to just match Matthew's line with your top defensive pairing and your top shutdown line and make Tavares and Nylander beat you. Those guys go off a little against lesser competition, but it is never enough for the leafs to win a series, so it seems to be a solid strategy. It started after Montreal made sure Webber and Danault were on the ice for every Matthew's shift in 21, and every playoff opponent Toronto has faced(with the exception of Tampa in 23) has seemed to have copied the strategy since with great success.

Matthews is a great player, but the recent playoff games that I have watched, his opponents are just draped all over him. It's hard to produce under those circumstances.

OZ-T doesn’t switch until the playoffs then he picks 3-4 teams during the course of the playoffs as his #1 team.

 

TO also lost Tavares for that entire series. When that freak accident happened, I knew the Leafs were done. Then Price absolutely stonewalled them.

Totally agree. I couldn't believe it. And, against the Stars. Like WTF?????

 

Pretty amazing. Made your man Jamie Benn break is stick in frustration though.

 

That was a pretty awesome comeback, and it was even better being against Dallas.
