Slip indicator light staying on

Ok so here is the breakdown of the order of what I've done. My horn stopped working one day so I finally got around to ordering a spiral cable and swapped it out. I was very careful to mark with a sharpie exactly where to put my steering wheel back on to have correct alignment. The spiral cable job took me all of 15-20 minutes. But when I was done my steering wheel was clocked a good 10% or more to the left from straight while driving down the road. So yesterday I pulled the airbag off to recheck my marks and they are still lined up. So I went again and pulled the steering wheel again and went I believe a single notch to the right to try and get it straight. Now I'm 5% to the right. I drove it around the parking lot and said screw it for now. This morning my slip indicator light is on from the start and doesn't turn off. My alignment seems to be fine going down the highway so I'm not sure why or how the steering won't line up and I'm not sure why suddenly this light is staying on. Any suggestions or help is welcome thanks.

Oh and it's for a 2012 DC OF.

 

The light is probably on because the steering wheel angle doesn't agree with the direction of travel.

It interesting though because typically the steering wheel is keyed so it can only be installed one way although I haven't had many Toyota steering wheels off so I can't remember if they are or not.

 

The light didn't come on until I adjusted it to try and fix the steering wheel direction as I mentioned. Which is confusing obviously because I didn't notice a key like you mentioned and when I had it on where I marked it as original setting the light didn't come on but the steering wheel was way to the left when it wasn't before almost as if something in the steering box bent to the left when I was removing the nut. Which obviously seems weird to have happened and also that it didn't trigger the light then?

 

If the steering wheel is straight when driving straight you can do a Zero Point reset, if it's not then you need to get it straight and then do a Zero Point reset.

Any recommendations on getting straighter? Like I mentioned above I feel like I went one notch to the right from the original location which was straight before taking it off in the first place and then it went to the left. Any ideas on what would've caused it to be turned to the left in the first place considering I got it lined back up exactly with the marks I made before removing it?

 

I'm not sure, if it was straight beforehand and you put it back where it was then it should still be straight.

Only other thing you can do is get it as straight as you can then get an alignment done.

 

I'm curious if there is something else at play. It's not been terribly long ago I had an alignment and it is still driving straight as ever and the steering wheel was straight on before pulling it off. Assuming I actually went one notch to the right the second time would mean I don't have a straight for some reason. And since it went left from straight while on the sharpie marks I made could there possibly been something going on with my steering box? I mean it doesn't feel sloppy or noticably different steering wise but I'm just kind of weirded out by this outcome

 

It's pretty much not possible for the rack to slip, the only other place the steering can shift relative to the rack is at each end the intermediate shaft where it splines onto the rack and the steering column stub but that also shouldn't happen if you didn't have those loose.

 

Unless I get some better info as of now I'm thinking of doing the zeroing thing with the closest to center I can get on the steering wheel after going by a shop and having them check my alignment and try to dail in the wheel with the tie rod adjustments I guess. I'm just kind of at a loss of why the wheel wouldn't have been straight being the same position as before pulling it off. From what I understand doing the zeroing calibration thing will get rid of the light and fix that side of the issue
