Is the hybrid engine a bust?

It must be a lot larger than the storage compartments in my access cab. I keep a majority of my storage gear in a separate arb bag because they don’t fit and it’s easier to grab and go with the bag when self recovering or pulling others out. It wouldn’t be super detrimental if I lost that storage. You can fit a lot in a 6ft bed. Replaced the stock storage cubby’s in the bed with lockable weather proof ones so that helps. I wonder where they put the hydraulic jack in the hybrids.

Yea, the battery takes up all the under seat storage. The batteries also ventilate into the rear foot well, so you need to be careful to not block the vents if you pack anything else in there.

 

Not sure about behind, but under seat storage has been eliminated for the batteries.

Some people it’s a deal breaker. I don’t care too much, but maybe folks who don’t use a topper, tonneau cover and keep the bed empty all the time care. It’s funny to me to own a vehicle that much cargo capacity and worry about losing that little amount of space.

 

I used to keep a tow strap, box of flares, jumper cables, a small block of wood, and a few other small items behind the seat of my F350. None of that fits behind the seat of my Taco. And of course the tool kit I had under the seat doesn't fit anywhere either. Wasn't a lot of room, but it was nice to have.

Anyways, I think the reason people complain about things like lack of storage behind the seat is because what else are you going to complain about? Oh right... it's a really nice truck. Most people are too busy enjoying it to be posting on the interwebs.

 

No tonneau or topper means shit left in the bed gets stolen. Inside storage is great

 

It’s nice to have that option for sure. Kind of the inherent drawback of a pickup truck though. Everything’s a compromise I suppose. There’s also not much you can do about larger items that need to go in the bed, that’s always been my dilemma at least. At the end of the day if a thief wants something bad enough there’s not much you can do. Big fan of sprinter vans for that reason.

 

For me the biggest wish when I had my 3G was an upgrade to a useful factory inverter solution. My use case is pretty specific and not everyone shares it. I wanted an offroad RV.

Everything at the time involved 2nd battery locations and battery management systems that when adding up parts and installation was very expensive and time consuming with a third party warranty chase and possibly Toyota declining warranty tied to said devices.

They came up with an amazing solution and everything else is icing on the cake. I am ecstatic to give up rear seat under storage when this monstrous shit is what others come up with: Thank you Toyota!

 

I think they are mostly selling the xtra cab SR as a commercial vehicle.
A friend of mine started working for Orkin. That is the only vehicle service techs are driving around.
Bare bones outside, evident from the wheels. I had never seen inside one. Nothing too exciting being a comm vehicle.
She said that access doors would be helpful, but she appreciates the fold down passenger seat as a work surface.
Her own opinion, being young and having many vehicles in her life, "It is the best vehicle I have driven." (I did not disagree).
Though seeing it, particularly inside, it would not have been a replacement for me even if Toyota did offer the TRD OR with that option and long bed.

 

There is some limited storage behind those rear passenger seats.
Two small spaces where I have jumper cables and some gloves.
Not much else will fit.

I have a DeWalt box that fits behind driver seat for a jump charger, a small compressor, and misc safety items.

Kind of ironic considering the "glove box" got its name from the first automobiles which has cubbies the gloves you'd use to jump your car via hand-crank.

 

Even dealers say KBB has always been notoriously inaccurate. The best gauge is the actual used car market ... and both used 2024 models list for like $2-3K below original MSRP.

Neither is a "value" but they're both great toys, not meant for those who worry about things like resale value.

 

Absolutely toys. A base model Corolla or Tacoma SR is more than anyone needs to get around but most people prefer nicer stuff.

 

KBB is a joke! We buy on black book and nada book. The last 2024 Pro I saw in the sales report at auction brought $56790 plus fees and it had 10k miles and I thought that was on point.

 

How do the hybrid and non hybrid have the same payload rating? Does that mean the payload of the non hybrid could be upgraded? Did they simply put heavier springs in the hybrid and everything else is the same?

the options are frustrating. I was considering the hybrid until i found out you can’t get a trd OR long bed with the hybrid. Don’t need a trailhunter or pro.

 

Payload is the maximum amount of weight it can safely carry. Hybrid and Non-hybrid payloads are the same but hybrids have bigger brakes to accommodate their heavier curb weight. Put bigger brakes on the non-hybrid and you could safely carry more.

 

Yes and no. Beyond braking, there’s the question of axles and wheel bearings not to mention that pesky decal in the door jam that either the litigious or the state will use to roast you in court should an accident happen while “over GVWR”.

 

My Land Cruiser has a ton of smooth power instantly whenever you need it. I really like the exhaust note. The hybrid/turbo/4cyl really works well, and I get 20-24 mpg per tank depending on how it’s used. I had it off road for the first time today on 6” of snow going through hay fields. Just idled all in 4H. I’m impressed.

 

I think the hybrids have a higher GVWR
