Holy cow, that pinion angle, and on a 4-link... All show, no go!

 

Personally, I find that box to be far too shallow in a comedy-horror-movie kind of way. Home depot's base model husky box is only $600, and far less 'sea legs'

Suspension on the stops. No air in the bags.

 

i understand that, but the diff looks to be pointing upwards at least 25 degrees within the system. a parallel 4-link kit is always specifically used to maintain the pinion angle throughout suspension travel. the upwards pinion angle doesn't make sense to me, because even if they hard-mounted a 3-link system to the axles, they'd still adjust the pinion for being parallel to the trans output shaft at ride height, which would make it run a negative angle at full suspension droop.

but it also doesn't make sense because from what i can see, they're running an equal-length parallel 4-link setup without a panhard bar.. 4-link by itself is possible, but is normally done by triangulating one set of the bars to keep the axle centered on the frame. a panhard bar is far easier on a street vehicle that doesn't see massive articulation, and the brake line lengths indicate that ride height isn't all that much higher. at ride height, that axle sure looks like it's going everywhere but staying under the truck.

of course, there's videos of them drifting the truck, i just don't see how the suspension stays in place.

there's a 5th link that goes from drivers-side-chassis to passenger-side-diff on the lower set of links. diff still looks crooked though, and there's a double-joint on the 5th link to allow the suspension to articulate, though it seems like it would represent a significant shear load given the torque at play... the angle in the original facebook video, this is in the shadows and is almost invisible. interesting variation on the same idea. i haven't seen many 4-links done that way, but it makes sense why to do it. actually seems simpler and easier than most people make suspension work. though i'd probably just tie in across the base of the bottom 4-links with some heim joints, it seems it would represent less of a shear load than the design they went with.


this is why i can't go to car shows... everyone else is drooling over the factory oil filter installed in an all-original 500-mile '72 mustang, and i'm over in the corner talking to the kid with the rusty ford escort with neon underglow and a pepboys audio system, letting him tell me how he linked a mechanical throttle to the bass beat of the music.
