Power Stop Brake Kits

I see two brake kits available and I'm not sure which one to go with. I have a 2018 TRD Sport 2WD Auto. The second one is more expensive. It looks like the first one is on sale. I will probably go with that one.

Both use cheap drilled rotors, so neither. Look for a kit that uses slotted rotors only. Drilling a stock size rotor is just providing stress points to crack, removes needed material for thermal mass and provides no performance benefit.

I think you're going to be hard pressed to find any real world difference between those two kits. I would personally just go with the one that is on sale. Power stops generally seen as a decent brand so can't go wrong with either imo.

 

Just get the TRD front pads and OE everything else. They are pretty dusty, but give a noticeable performance boost
Dont bother with drilled rotors, they wont help and they weaken the rotor

 

I have run both.. and there is a very big difference between them.

The Extreme is 1000000% the better kit and has saved me from many accidents here in AZ with the idiot drivers everywhere. The Evolution kit had terrible cold bite and was downright scary at times. Zero issues since switching to the Extremes ~13k miles ago.

OP how many miles are on your truck? The rear shoes should last ~150-200k pretty easily, and you can grab just the front Extreme kit for much cheaper than the full setup.

Also OP, since you are in AZ I still have my front OEM take-offs with ~1200 miles on them (pads, rotors and lines) if you wanted them for cheaps.

My truck only has 38,000 mi on it. I haven't even inspected everything yet but my pedal feels low. Just wanted to get some info ahead of time. I may need front pads and maybe the rear just needs an adjustment.

You don't have any issues with the drilled rotors? This picture of cracks from the holes looks a little scarry.

 

I've been running drilled rotors since the mid 00's never had an issue.

 

I have 20K miles on this PowerStop kit with no problems. The rotors in post #10 look to be off the vehicle which is a good thing.

What's wrong with OE pads and rotors? 73k miles still have some life on the original pads.

 

I normally stick with OEM but had a braking vibration that started around 40K miles. I have 20K miles on PowerStop and very happy with them.

 

It's really the pedal feeling low. It feels like a long travel before it brakes. Maybe it's just me

 

I checked my rear brakes today. The pads have about 4mm on them. I think new they start out at 12mm (not 100% sure about that). According to the maintenance schedule they should be replaced @ 2mm.

I haven't checked the front yet but I will just change both the front and rear at once.I think the Extreme kit will work for me, I only drive about 4k per year so they should last.

When I pulled the drums off there was a paper gasket on the axle flange. Do I need to replace that also?

The paper gasket doesn't hold up very long. Knock the rust off with a small wire brush or Brillo pad and put a thin light coat of anti seize imo.

The oem pads and rotors are quality and hard to beat for the price. I really like the Wilwood big brake kit though.

The rear brake shoes probably need to be cleaned and adjusted if it hasn't been done. It may help with your pedal travel.

 

The first one on sale with the Z36 pads is the better setup.

 

I appreciate everyone's input. I cleaned and adjusted the rear and it did make a difference.

That being said, I made the mistake of going to the dealer for something unrelated. Of course I had to look around. Well, I ended up trading my 18 for a 23... just couldn't help myself.
