I Need Some Serious HELP

I rebuilt my rear axle and re-gearing sometime last year.And now I'm having the same problems which is leaking.Rear differential oil.This will be my third gasket for the pinion. Two in one year.

What is going on here?

 

Pictures of the 3rd member all bolted up doesn't really show anything. Seeing both surfaces that side up to the gasket would be a good place to start. Did you use any gasket sealer when the gasket was changed?

 

I have no idea what the shop did to it. I hate going into the shops cause they are sharks. But I can't answer that question 100%. What I think they use was a rubbery sealant.

 

It actually started pealing off around the pinion.

 

If a shop did the work last year it should be on them. Bring it back and demand they make it right.

Or any other RTV rated for Gear Oil will work.
Relying on the "paper" gasket alone is asking for a leak.

 

It's not the paper gasket.

I bought the breather mod hope it works.
And they are going to reseal it for free.

 

I never seen the breather plug up and blow through the 3rd member.
It almost always blows through the axle seal.

When they do the reseal. I'd make sure to wire wheel the surfaces really good.
Then RTV and Gasket it.

 

Probably a poor prep or sealant choice the first time. As you stated it started "peeling off", that suggest they gooped it up eternally and didnt properly reseal it. What color was it? Hopefully not blue!

 

Question. Does toyota use a gasket from factory on the 3rd member, a combination of gasket and rtv, or just rtv by itself. From personal experience on other vehicles I have had much better luck just using rtv by itself.

 

Toyota factory does have a gasket ,but the surfaces need to be cleaned 100 percent perfectly , you can use rtv also that’s rated for gear oil . Unfortunately all things like this can leak if not properly cleaned , seated and torqued in a proper sequence / which will insure proper seating. It has always been that way
Who ever did the work needs to fix it properly .

I suspect if this work was done at a shop they didn't take the time to properly clean the surfaces. When I'm working with gasket surfaces at home I always either use some type of aerosol cleaner or use a rag with laquer thinner or alcohol on it, something that will clean the oily surface dry. With aerosol cleaners just be-careful you don't spray contaminants into the unit. Remember manufactures are starting with clean dry surfaces.

So I asked him that question too, if they sand the surface down. So now here is a twist, when I go to top off the rear differential fluid, as I unscrew the refill plug, tons of pressure pushes out.

I checked my breather for the dif I think it okay but to me I think it just doesn't breath enough. If that makes sense.

 

Is air coming out or going in?
The breather is a one-way valve.
It lets air OUT, not in.

Most people check their differential when it's cold.
Cold air condenses, and makes a vacuum.

Hot air expands and creates pressure.

If yours has a lot of pressure, that's not good.
Some, or very little pressure is ok, but not a lot.

Yesterday I went back for them to look at it. I told him I changed the fluid for the rear and I found a little piece of metal like a little shaving. He said that is normal.

 

Should have added -- that Permatex #81182 I posted above can be used without a separate gasket. Or, what I prefer, is apply a thin coating of it on both sides of a gasket.
It's the only stuff I have used that doesn't eventually leak. Because of that, it's the only sealant I will use if gear oil is involved.
