Ironically enough, another Boeing program that is often forgotten about. P-8 has been pretty smooth sailing as far as budget and schedule go... we will see what happens with the upcoming mod programs on them though.

When I was training at ERAU in Prescott we had a lot of dark areas (and mountains) at night. The one thing that has stuck with me all these years from my instructor when doing engine out training at night, "When you think you are close to the ground, turn on your landing light. If you like what you see leave it on, if you don't turn it off....."

I would like to add a mention of Lockheed here. I always considered the Wide-Body L-1011 TriStar to be a beautiful aircraft. I was fortunate to fly three times in one and it never failed to make me smile boarding or de-planing, while walking past the engines up close with their classic/signature "Roll Royce" badges on them. The "Whisperliner" provided super comfort for the passenger: "Never more than one seat away from the aisle") and they must have been a dream to fly as well. I can only wish I knew. They were only produced for eleven years: 1972-1983. (DC10 for comparison: 1969-1989)

I still believe that this is the Tri-Jet that should have won the battle over the DC-10. Living in the middle of the country, I was never fortunate enough to catch a ride on either airframe, but I still think that the L-1011 had all the best traits of the two, not to mention that was way prettier than the Douglas entry.

...^^^... Looking at older threads now and saw this and it brought back memories ... lol

Flew slicks then assault helos off the USS Okinawa LPH-3 with USMC BLT 1/3 and remember a pitching deck off the coast of RVN ... not this much ... but still pitching.

The most ironic thing is ... it's 1013 hours now and I am sitting at the kitchen table having brunch at a friend's house now in Ho Chi Minh City (old
Saigon) typing this now. ......... Wow, how the world changes as we navigate through life. Love Vietnam and SE Asia now (even with past memories).

Married to a cool SEAsian lady helps a lot too.

PS .. Two days ago we had the best seafood buffet and at the best price in my life here. I will post some pics of it later in the "Foodies Section".

When factors beyond engineering become relevant to management goals? Idk. Buzzword of the day is a symptom, not the cause, which is a non engineering focused culture. That said, cost-plus is also a culprit there. "We can do amazing things if you pay our costs" can quickly become a profit center where "hey let's inflate costs as much a spossible".

Gotta love TALON (or other deck lock systems)...

Personally, my fave is watching HIFRs... I think I linked one somewhere.

Last time I checked, engineers are human, even if they tend to have poor social skills. Engineering is also one of the most historically white male dominated sectors of industry. Attracting and retaining the best possible talent and brains is a pretty top-tier management goal, especially in a Fortune 500 company, at which I happen to have worked at for over 2 decades. Attracting and retaining that talent to feel safe, productive, suppported, and happy, regardless of gonads and skin color, just makes good, productive, and profitable business sense.

Remember that time you got a job because your resume just said white guy?
Yeah, me neither. Every job I've been offered it was because they felt i was the best applicant. Not because I fit a certain demographic.
DEI lowers talent hires and retention because you aren't interested in the best candidate, just a certain look. That's fine for Hooters, but companies doing important stuff should hire the best. I don't care the color or creed, I just want the best.

I guess we can agree to disagree, but I'd rather work for and with people who are at least as talented as I am and are not there just because of something unrelated to the job. That applies to a lot more than just DEI hires.

You seem oblivious to the difference between equal opportunity and DEI.
In the past, it was typically white males being hired. Equal opportunity changed that to promote hiring of the best candidates regardless of race creed or any other things that were discriminatory.
DEI pretty much requires hiring less than the best, just to be able to hit the quotas. That’s the epitome of discrimination and the result is a lower quality workforce.

...^^^... Semper Fi ... Yes, some good memories and some not so good, but I choose to remember the good ones.

FWIW, sometimes it seems like that was another person and not me back then and sometimes it seems like a different life all together back then.

When I am in Vietnam now and on other trips here and to SEAsian, I COMPLETELY FORGET that I was even in the military here. Weird, but that works for me. .......... Actually, I forget about it at home too, don't wear any identifying military gear now like jackets and/or hats and etc.

I am surprised that the Vietnamese still love Americans and don't really like the Chinese and Russians who helped the north (aka NVA) back then.

The kids (especially the little ones) are very curious when they see me. I see very few, if any Americans or round eye whites at the big mall when we go there and we go there almost daily to walk. The little kids come up to me and want to practice their English from an American. They like American English much more than UK or Australian English and if you are American and teach English here, you make twice as much as the others who teach it.

There is still some psychological and cultural tension between the north, Hanoi and the south, HCMC (Saigon). Hanoi is the capitol and more stern with bland government offices and the south, Saigon is the economic generator of the country with cool and modern buildings. HCMC (Saigon) is much more capitalistic and much more friendly. Some compare NYC (Hanoi) vs a small town (HCMC) in the southern USA as far as being more friendly in HCMC.

If you want to live here, DaNang (used to be the world's busiest airport during the RVN war) is the place with super beaches and great places to live at good prices.

PS ... Having an Asian wife helps a lot too and she is the perfect wife and mom in my book.
