Have a question regarding these tires.

I have a 2005 double cab short bed 6 speed that I am currently changing the suspension, wheels, and tires on. And I am stuck between tire choices.

Truck is on Bilstein 6112's up front set at "1.8 inch" clip, 5160's in rear with Icon Rxt leaf packs set on option 1.
    3rd gen TRD offroad wheels

I am really wanting to run 255/85R16 for a size but am debating between 265/75R16's and 235/85R16's as well due to tire availability, or lack there of in the 255 size.

The two tires im looking at in the 255 size are the Falken Wildpeak A/T4w and the Cooper discoverer st maxx.

I need a tire that has decent street manners, still does well on loose dirt/gravel trails, logging roads, etc. and can generally perform well offroad, And is excellent on snowy roads.
Are the coopers good in snowy icy road conditions?

The other concern for me is the weight of these two tires in this size. so also considering the other two sizes for the weight factor, along with more tire selection.

I do like and prefer a skinny tire so id lean 235 over 265.

for reference the old set up how I bought the truck is rough country 3.5" lift with 285/70R17 terra grappler g2's on some offset pro comp wheels. Rode really rough and tires rubbed alot just driving on the street.

Anyways, thanks for any tips or pros and cons for the tires/sizes! cant wait to get it all done

FWIW my st maxxs have vibes that i have not been able to solve despite having them balanced 4-5 times. they are the worst balancing tires i have owned. i had no such issues with the previous Falken ATW3s.

super happy with the offroad traction, rain and snow performance are good, and they wear slowly but there are too many other good tires out there to deal with this balancing nonsense. i wont buy them again.

Thank you for the info. Kind of disappointing to hear though, hope you get it worked out.

We have stock size falken at4w's on my wifes 4runner and they have been pretty good all around so far.
Switched from duratracs on the 4runner and id say it was for the better.

I have always run duratracs on my full size trucks and love them, not an option in the 255 size however.

I haven't had the Coopers but I've had AT3W (SL) and AT4W (C). Both have been awesome. I'd highly recommend the AT4W although the weight doesn't make me smile. Jury is still out on the snow/ice traction as I haven't tested that yet - but lots or reviews make them sound not that great. The AT3W by comparison was fantastic in snow/ice.

I’ve never run either personally, but I know that the majority of people who run the ST Maxx’s say that they pull to the right no matter what you do.

I’m sure you came across that in your research but figured I’d mention it just in case you hadn’t. I was very close to buying them several different times but I just couldn’t get past all the reviews and posts that say they pull to the right.

Thanks for your input guys. And yes I had seen it mentioned a couple times about the pulling right.

As much as I want the 255 size tire I'm really starting to lean more towards the 235/85R16. In that size I can get a tire I've really been interested in, the cooper discoverer stronghold at.
Where with the 255 I'm really not thrilled with any options.

I was in the same boat, I really wanted to run the “pizza cutters” but before they released the Wildpeak in the 255 size it was basically all mud tires and then the ST Maxx.

Yeah I figured it would be limited an options, but I was surprised how limited.
I'll probably revisit the 255 for the next set because it won't be my daily driver anymore and then I'll probably run the bfg mud terrains in 255

I used to run 255/85/16 coopers... I remember when I said I'd never run anything else but those.. I ran into the same issue as you did with the 16s.. so I went up to.17s.. infact I have a set of 4runner wheels with 255/80/17 coopers with sensors in my garage.. I upgraded to the newer Toyota open country rt trail in 255/80/17 and I absolutely love this tire over the coopers.. I know you don't really want to but id definitely go up to 17s so you get a better selection of tires.. 16s are a dying breed unfortunately
Here's a quick picture of 255/80/17 s on my new setup any the old...PXL_20250321_215916919.jpg PXL_20250319_212956054.jpgthese are the coopers on 4runner wheels

How do you like them otherwise? Have you had them in snow?

    Looks awesome!
My truck has 17's on it now, I just picked up the TRD offroad 16's a couple days ago so not looking to switch back at the moment haha.
But yes, I went into this knowing that choices in 16's were going to be less. I just didnt expect the choices in that particular size to be so limited...

as i said above... the good is offroad traction, rain and snow performance, and slow wear. i have had them deep snow wheeling with good results. sidewalls are tough. i guess they look good if thats important to you.

the bad is weight, not the smoothest or most quiet (athough acceptable) tires and of course the vibes.

i had an issue with the sidewalls cracking around the bead early on but Cooper came good for that through Discount tire and replaced a few so that specific issue was isolated.

I’ve been considering switching to a 17” wheel for the same reason. I think 16” wheels look way better but it’s so frustrating trying to find the tire I want in the size I want.

They look nice and some, with the right wheel need less cutting…

I didn’t make a comment but I had 255/85/16 coopers and was not happy with them. They lasted about 20-25k miles and wore oddly. Could have been bad alignments. I really like my Baja Boss A/Ts but they don’t offer a skinny version, well 255/85/16 from what I remember.

Thanks for the input. I looked into the Baja boss as well, they don't make it in the 255/85/16. I don't believe they make it in the 235 either. Great looking tire though that caught my eye
