Hello I have a 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport with 85k miles. I have started to notice this engine noise while idling and driving ever since some friends pointed out that their Tacoma's don't make the same noise. I have tried to do some research online and heard that the noise was normal, or it was a cleaning cycle, but I hear this noise almost every time I start the truck and drive it. I hear it a lot after driving for 15 min+ and i put it in park and Idle. I have taken it to my mechanic and they couldn't seem to find the issue, they replaced the oil and filter, added the oil booster, and replaced transmission fluid, but no luck and are recommending me to take it back to the Toyota Dealership. I have been on top of oil changes and maintenance. I am just concerned and wanted some guidance on what steps I should take moving forward. Is this noise normal? or should I take it to the Dealership? Any advice helps thank you so much.

Here is a video of the noise:

That doesn’t sound normal to me I would start by raising the hood and see if the sound is coming from the right side (passenger side) near the right rear corner of engine. If so it may be your vacuum pump that’s failing.

It could also be the HP fuel pump near the same location as vacuum pump although the HP fuel pump is more of a ticking sound.

The noise in the video is somewhat muffled and so it’s hard to tell, but that the speed/frequency of the noise and the tone makes it sound like a tapping lifter to me. There have been a number of times on mine where I hear a loud tapping 5 or so times a second which is about right for valve noise at an idle of 600 rpm.

My guess is one of the hydraulic lifters fails to pump up and creates some slop in the rocker.

Does the noise kind of go away if you build oil pressure by revving the engine up?

It is on the right side, near the valve cover area per my mechanic. But they didnt want to go further to try and avoid costs

HPFP from the sound of it if it hasn't been replaced. They had issue with those in 2019.

Hard to say but I don’t hear anything concerning. Sounds like mine best I can tell. Maybe in person I’d think differently, but it’s really hard to say.

Not to scare you, but that sounds like bottom end.

Don't take it to the dealer unless you intend to trade it in. If you do get a shop to look at it, ask them to keep it off record or word it so it doesnt pop up.

That is without a doubt, 100%, your vacuum pump. Mine knocks, there IS a TSB for it, but I still have yet to get it replaced. It's not hurting anything at the moment. Hope this helps!

Not saying you’re wrong, but that doesn’t sound like the vacuum pumps I’ve heard. I don’t really hear anything in the latest video.

This is mine when hood is popped. When I am in the cabin, it does sound like diesel, I am just looking at MPG and keep checking dipstick once every 2 weeks to tell myself that it is all okay. If something was wrong I assume MPG would tank hard and i would see something in the oil

I think the area in the video of the engine bay that he points to is also exactly where the vacuum pump lies. Here's a few threads to compare sounds, if it isn't the vacuum pump, both my truck and I are VERY screwed

C'mon. Mine sounds like this since 2021-22. Bottom end has not left the chat yet.

I hear a knock in some of the angles. And he’s compared to others with the same engine.

I think this is cause by hydro lifters. Just a few rpms clear the noise.
