I was surprised to see the rear glass lower corners are not up against any backing. If you bump the glass anywhere else, no problem. If you bump the glass with some kind of cargo at those corners I would think they would snap right off.

There’s been at least one post of breakage due to the design…

I was looking at this today and thought this seems unfinished. Like Toyota forgot about it.

Another issue with this rear glass that has changed from the previous generation is the sliding dr./opening height has been raised so now any long 2x4 or anything else you wish to transport becomes even more difficult to secure at the back of the bed.
The older version was way more convenient , lower and easier to secure overall for short distances

What were they smoking in product development when they came up with this crazy idea..,, ?

Having just bought my first ever new vehicle, I'm disappointed (yes should have anticipated this, dumb me, please don't tell me it should have been obvious and make me cry) I don't have a market of used items to buy. I bought my 2nd gen cap for $300 because I bought the truck 4 years old and someone else had totaled theirs. Having trouble convincing myself $2500 for a new cap is anything but nutso bonkers cracra. I'm going to tough it out.

Ran into some sticker shock as well this time around.
Quite the price difference compared to my color matched fiberglass ARE canopy on my 2005 TRD OR that I got in 2010ish.

If I have something that is too long, I carry it like this or with the tailgate down. Why risk damaging your headliner?

4K for a topper? Is steep, I’ll be waiting for something used eventually? Cheap Tyger $200 trifold bed cover for now.

It’s wicked hard to find used shells these days. I gave up looking for my 2nd gen. Whenever I see one it’s either several states away, over $1k, or snapped up in seconds by people that have nothing else to do but flip car parts.

With a canopy on a 3rd gen, long moulding or baseboards for home remodeling can be carried by feeding it through the cab rear window and canopy front window.
It keeps the long items from getting wet and dirty while driving in rain if they need to be stained or painted when back at home.

A few extra 16 ft deck boards can be transported/returned to the lumber yard by passing them through the cab and canopy windows with the tailgate down and the canopy window down, and then strapped and tied in.

Placing a canopy rear window partially closed on top of lumber resting on top of a closed tailgate risks breaking the canopy window when the lumber or truck bounces over bumps.

And yes, resting really long deck boards on top of the dashboard with a blanket underneath risks smashing the windshield if making a quick, unexpected stop of the truck.

I hear you, but ARE Z caps were >$2k in 2009 as were the comparable Leer caps. Sticker price was like $24k for the new 4 cylinder, 4WD, SR5, extended cab that I bought in 2009.

Lots of stuff has more than doubled in price in 16 years.

I agree w/ you regarding the odd design decision there. Not gonna say this will absolutely prevent it from breaking, but will likely save it from 99% of the bonehead moves I'd make and instantly regret (cheap rubber stoppers from Amazon)
