Brake dust

Anyone else have excessive brake dust on your front wheels? My taco only has 320 miles on the odo. And it is covered in brake dust. More than my other cars in the past.

 

Brake dust means brakes are working.

 

funny... my other cars brakes work perfect also but are clean.

I can't say as I've noticed a lot of brake dust on mine, though I have black wheels, so I wouldn't see it as much. It does depend on what compound they use for the pads. For instance, the OE Textar pads for my old BMW dusted like hell; the wheels got absolutely filthy really fast. I changed them out for ceramic pads and there was much less dust. BMW's stance on it was "The pads we picked have the performance characteristics we were looking for. Just wash your car. You should be doing that frequently anyway."

 

I don't have a 4th gen but I can say that pads typically have 3 compromises related to their performance.

• Dust
• Noise
• Rotor wear

If you want pads that have better performance without increasing rotor wear, noise, or both, you generally produce more dust. You can probably find pads with less dust but the performance will like drop a little. ​

 

You don’t see the copper colored dust on my wheels? Wheels are black.

 

I washed this wheel one week ago. I wiped it so you can see the underlying color of the wheel.

Ah, I see it now on my computer. Looked like light reflection on little image on my phone. yup brake dust. keep driving.

If you get them professionally ceramic coated the brake dust won't stick nearly as bad.

The amount of brake dust depends on what brake pad material is used. The oem pads on my 3rd gen dust pretty bad too.

 

That's a lot of dust. Dragging caliper? Feel your wheels after driving 5 miles or so. Are they hot?

 

320, A month or so without washing the truck?
Pretty normal....
Both calipers are NOT going to hang-up......
Have to keep your wheels clean or that brake dust will imbed itself into the wheel coating....
Letting brake dust just accumulate for months on your wheels isnt good.....

 

No heat from the wheels. It’s cold to the touch.
Anyone else with off road hybrid Tacoma with this much dust?

 

Youre not answering my question, how long has it been inregards to how many days since its been washed...?
My non hybrid collects alot of brake dust on the front wheels....
Since mine is a garage queen I can go 3 weeks without washing the truck & see that brake dust on my front method wheels....
So sometimes I just was my wheels only...

 

Sorry I didn’t understand your question clearly. I picked up the truck brand new from the dealers lot last Saturday. So I’ve been driving it a week. Currently have 300 miles on it.
I have not washed it yet.

 

Really think theres nothing to worry about.
Maybe just more dust now as the brake pads are seating into the rotors...
If the wheels aren't hot which im sure theyre not, keep any eye on it...

 

FYI, I have an SR5 and I had lots of brake dust on the front wheels for the first two weeks. After about 600 miles it has tapered off. So I would say give it a while and then check.

 

Some dark bronze wheels from SCS would probably help hide the brake dust.
