Gas tank size says 21 gallons but...

I never get below 1/4 tank - if the SHTF I wanna GTF Outta the City and head for the hills,
hopefully before everyone else does. So I like to keep it 3/4 or more at all times. Plus with the
price going up daily I figure it pays to save a few dimes here or there. I suspect we'll see $4.00+
by mid June.

 

22.6 gallons is my best in this 21 gallon tank.

 

My best is 487.9 miles that burned 20.369 gals. That was about 60 miles extra after hitting 0 miles to empty.
Most gals. on a refill: 21.39

 

Never run it low air is bad for the fuel pump ..

Ran it low for 10 years on my 1994 Toyota Pickup. No problems.
Ran it low for 14 years on my 2004 Tacoma. No problems.
Running it low for 7 years on my 2018 Tacoma. No problems.

9 miles to empty, 19.3 gallons to fill.

 

Never understood why folks run their fuel tanks to practically empty. May miscalculate one day and strand yourself to lack of fuel. Once in awhile I see someone either at home or on the road using a fuel can to add to their vehicle.

 

I read earlier in this thread. Prem gas… why?

If I get anywhere near 1/4, I fill it up.
Since buying it in January of 2016, I think I've seen the low fuel light three times.
Two of which a friend of mine was driving while we were on a road trip.

 

I've put up to 20 gallons in mine. Guage was on empty for several miles.
Not sure why you are seeing 1/4 tank left when you still have 9 gallons in it.

 

I could poke around in the NIST National Institute of Standards and Technology handbooks, but your fuel tank and how much you can pump into it have a lot of factors that determine how much fuel you can pump. Generally, there is some space in your tank to account for expansion and vapor. Most gas stations fuel islands will be level, but not necessarily the ground in front of it. You see less of it, but sometimes someone will try to fill their tanks all the up the filler neck to the point where it's overflowing. Not really good to do that. And it's probably less likely with our plastic fuel tanks, but guys that had 3rd gen 4Runners would dent their tanks and wonder why they couldn't pump as much fuel. It's just displacement.

 

I made the switch to 91 premium a few months back. Slightly better fuel economy, but smoother idle and acceleration. Overall the engine runs better and the truck seems happier. There was some speculative discussion about a possible relation to 3rd gen engine failures with retarded timing/lean conditions and 87 octane, but there wasn't a lot of substance to it. Moreover, lean conditions have been reported on the passenger side of the block, so likely something other than just a fuel octane issue (bad injector, ect).
My local Costco is currently 60 cents a gallon more for premium. I fill up at half tank, call it 10 gallons, it's an extra $6.00.

 

I have to call shenanigans on the claim of better economy and performance; 91 has marginally less power per unit of fuel compared to 87. The only vehicles which will benefit from 91 have engines specifically designed to take advantage of the additional anti knock properties of the fuel.

 

Here in CA, the fuel prices jump up and down constantly.
I buy or top off when there is a price dip.
