Yeah, any hi heat, oil-present spot where the FSM calls for seal packing including the oil pan. (FYI...Gearbox mating uses Toyota orange FIPG but those are the only two current varieties I'm aware of).

I've also read people here like Permatex The Right Stuff but I've never had a leak using what Toyota recommends and have sealed lots of oil pans and valve covers.

Yea, that's what most folks on here use for the half moons and beside the cam caps

So I'm referring to the 5vz procedures but I believe the head/cam layout is similar enough the same would apply to the 3rz. Let me dig up the diagram from the FSM. It shows all the spots they recommend little dabs of RTV and it includes either side of each cam cap.

The 2/3RZ has everything under the valve cover.

 

yeah mine doesn’t have a cam cap that looks like that. It’s a little different. I think the only spots I need it at is under the front of the head gasket, oil pan, and timing cover.

 

my question is do I have to use the Toyota or aisin stuff or can I use black permatex?

 

Regular old Permatex black RTV silicone would probably work okay, but I would suggest something better like Ultra Gray, Ultra Black, or FIPG.

 

The Permatex stuff is probably adequate, but I'm a firm believer that the Toyota Black FIPG 103 is the best sealant available. So given the lengths you've already gone to, I'd splurge another $20 for a tube

Okay so I’m a little stuck on number 22. It says apply a 3mm bead of rtv sealant to timing cover sealing surface. Where is that at? Because where the timing cover meets the block there is a gasket and then at the top it sits on the head gasket and the bottom is the oil pan so where does it need the rtv at?

 

I’m assuming Haynes directions are for installing with sealant only no gasket. When I’m using a gasket on any sealing surface I always apply a very thin layer of sealant to both sides of the gasket and then install. Not to head gaskets just things like timing chain covers, water pumps etc. This is my way of doing things so wait and see if dirty or red think different.

So where do you guys recommend applying the ultra black on the timing cover because I have gaskets for the timing cover where it meets the block. @Red_03Taco @Dirty Dude

 

Some guys swear by dry gaskets I’ve just always used a very thin layer for piece of mind never had a gasket leak or fail.
