Just finished designing a solution for the tiny cupholder and wasted space of the center console on the 2nd Gen Tacoma!

I often complained about the lack of places to put things like pens and keys, or large drinking containers like a Nalgene, Yeti, Stanley, etc. The stock center console is just a bad design!

After a few months of development and testing, I honed in on this design. It is held in place with four 1"x1" squares of 3M SJ3560 heavy duty hook-and-loop ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AQ6IS1G ), which is plenty strong for the high heat in vehicle interiors.

This has been a gamechanger for day to day use of the truck, and feels like a natural part of the interior. A large bottle like a Nalgene can sit in the cupholder and doesn't interfere with the gear shifter or opening the center console compartment.

If you have a 3d printer, I have the file available for download here: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/gad...lder-tray-for-2nd-gen-2005-2015-toyota-tacome

If not, I have a few of the prototypes that I would be willing to sell, and I would be willing to print these for order if there is interest.

A Console Tray in black PETG will be $65 shipped.

Please feel free to suggest colors (such as a dark grey) and I would be happy to add these to the options.

Also, let me know if you would like to see a version with a smaller cupholder because that would be fairly easy to develop. Cheers!

Nice job! Is there a way to make it mount into the existing cupholder instead of using Velcro? Just an idea

It’s odd that the 2gen MT had the perfect large cup holder, but the AT did not.

I explored that route (along with "wings" to mount it to the sides of the center console), but it created more problems than it was worth. Mounting to just the cupholder puts all of the load just into the cupholder walls, so a friction fit wouldn't produce a secure mount long term.

Also, the geometry produced by using a cupholder insert wouldn't be 3d printing friendly. It would require a lot more support material (more waste and more print time). So then I explore doing two parts - the cupholder insert and the tray. But then you have multiple parts, which again is more print time, materials, things to go wrong, and complexity.

The simple answer is that the 3M material just works. Its commonly used in vehicle interiors, even in direct sunlight, to hold objects securely for years and years. Its removable with no residue, very secure and rugged, and means that this tray mounts up easily with no hardware and has zero wobble. I didn't want to like it at first, but after testing it out I've come around.

What if you made the cup holder hollow at the bottom and the nalgene can
slide all the way through into the cup holder. then you could make the walls of your cup holder shorter.
Probably would still be a good idea for the 3m stuff too but would offer a little more stability.

I don't know, just spit ballin ideas here.

nevermind, just realized the nalgene won't fit thus the basis of this invention haha. my bad.

That's actually an interesting idea, but I would still want a spot for the 3M material in that corner which almost definitely nixes that plan - and also the floor of this try is very thin so you wouldn't be gaining much. The current height of the walls is really nice actually, so its not really a problem. Also, the 3M material really makes this mount rock solid, there is zero wobble or stability concerns.
