The rock guard was there in prior gen as well as the ppf in strategic locations, not a change for 3rd gen, dropping standard mudflaps was though. Guessing Toyota bean counters just decided no standard flaps saved money and looks wise why not drop them.

Bigger for an SR5 which came with 245/70/17's and I put on 265/70/17 which is the TRD Offroad factory size. Most of the damage started with the stock 245's.

Yep, its common for all stockers and mall crawlers too from the few forums and groups I've been in, the just get mudflaps or sliders excuse is ridiculous, bad design thought or lack of thinking on Toyota's part. Especially on a $60k truck that is literally marketed to offroad.

I don't think mudflaps were standard for 3rd gens. I had a 2021 TRD OR that did not come with them.

It may have started with stock but the majority of those chips are due to the larger tires.

No, the majority of those happened with the old tires. Only been through one "storm" where they threw down salt since the tires got put on.

In that case there is going to be considerably more going forward, you need Canadian mud flaps and more PPF

The ones I have are decently sized

But yes, repair work and PPF is going to be required. It already trashed the factory PPF so it might even be a yearly re-apply thing. Terrible design.

It’s a bad design for sure and anyone saying just run flaps and ppf is kidding themselves. That PPF is gonna also look like sh*t and need replaced.

I have zero chips on my 24 TRD OR premium and being a Canadian truck have the mud flaps and the running boards. I think the running boards are preventing 99% of this happening.

Yea I kinda know first hand mud flaps don't do jack, maybe if they are long enough they're almost touching the road

Running boards might help, but man I hate those things. Had them on my '22 and it made it more of a PITA to get in and out of the truck.

But, since the truck is already designed and built I guess it will be a constant battle of the PPF :annoyed:

I see what you're saying, I just don't like the look and functionality of running boards. The overall solution shouldn't have to be that, but might be. I had two 3rd gens that had none of the chipping.

There is a huge difference getting in and out of the 24 with running boards and the older model with running boards. Before I got my truck a friend let me borrow his 23 model for a week to see how I liked the Tacoma and I found it next to impossible getting in to his truck without contorting my body to get in. Based on that alone I would never have ordered the 24 but luckily my dealer had a new 24 in stock and just got right in with no issues at all .So you might want to reconsider.

I had a 2nd gen (2010) before and it didn't have the rock guard under the rocker panel paint. What year was it added?

The 2nd gen flaps were very effective but many people complained about them scraping on curbs and tall speed bumps. Toyota shortened the optional ones for 3rd gen, which made them less effective. I got Rokblokz XL for the length. Rokblokz's listing says their 4th gen flaps don't fit the Trailhunter, perhaps because of the wider flares.

My question to the this forum is does every trim model have this issue or is it the trailhunter trim? Why isn’t 100% every owner of 4th gen not complaining of this issue?

I have a trd off road that has been driven 300 miles so far of mixed highway and local paved roads only and so far no chips. I’d imagine all trims have the same rear quarter body shape bulge hips although the SR5 model has less fender flares?

Have seen all trims reported. Will depend a lot on condition of your roads, location, etc. 300 miles isn't alot, give it time, every gen I've had even the prior ones with less aggressive lines have chipped back there with anything besides stock tires/setup. PPF will spare you some but it will inevitably chip somewhere else. I had PPF all up the rockers, rear, front on my 2019 still got chips outside PPF, my 22 is PPF'd and still got some random strays running a less than aggressive offset and I'm a mall crawler. My 2020 which was stock after a chicago winter or two was pretty blasted all around, toyota paint sucks to be honest.
