Does anyone think that 0w-20 could be an issue? With this motor being part direct injection, fuel contamination can cause the oil to degrade. What does the viscosity of 0w-20 end up being at 5k miles? I thought when the 2gr was originally developed, it used 5w-30.

Im curious to hear how this needed an engine, especially seeing you could drive over 10 hours on it

I’ve gotten a few oil analysis done over the years with my 19. I drive it about 7-8k a year, it’s my daily driver but I also own a Lexus. I do 6 month intervals on it so….3500-4k mile intervals.

The M1 5w20 always tests out within its spec viscosity range and almost untraceable fuel detected in the samples. It’s not the oil as long as you use a good one, it’s how often you change it. 5w20 will do the job in this engine as long as you change it.

That’s a heck of a drive! Did you go to Edmonton or Grande Praire?

I don't think that would be a cause here. Under the free oil changes from Toyota they filled my truck with 0w-16 duringthe summer and refused to correct it saying it was fine
Long story short i'm over 200'000kms past that time and although I wouldn't willingly run 0w-16 and I run 0w/5w-30 now, I have no notable ill effects from.

Viscosity degradation is real but honestly I don't think thats a factor here

Did you do a comoprssion test? That #3 plug looks steam cleaned, especially in comparison to the other bank which is running extremely dirty. That, plus the oil found in the intake at 500km interval makes me think you have a piston with extremely bad rings causing a lot of blowby, which in addition to the rich condition would be fouling out the plugs. With the one bank of cylinders having significantly cleaner plugs, I'd suspect a headgasket issue on that bank. Excess oil burning would cause issues with the cat(s), leading to issues down the road even with a new motor.

You already have it at the shop, and they're already indicating a motor replacement. I'd ask for a verification of a headgasket failure on one bank. If you are not the original buyer, I'd also ask them to check for signs of stop-leak being introduced into the coolant system. If the previous owner suspected a headgasket leak and pump it full of stop leak to trade it in... not sure that helps if you have any sort of warranty from the dealer you purchased from.

Did you ever notice it losing coolant?

The local shop in YK said that they did a compression test of 150psi on all cylinders, but didnt test 5 or 2 cylinder, unsure, as their story has changed. I'm done with that shop. No leak down test.
Right before the drive all plugs looked fouled.

Never lost a drop of coolant.

Great suggestions, thanks, I'll be reaching out to the dealer tomorrow. Agree that the cats could be clogged.
