I think you have a great design. the space between the deck and the frame just's scream's big sliding drawer.

 

Thanks. This thing is solid and heavy. I ended up using 3/16. It'll probably out last the truck. And I triangulated the headache rack to be able to be used as a functional roll bar (hopefully I never need it). I was thinking about running peices at an angle from the bottom of the overhang to the side of the box and then plate that instead of just the box, but the shock hoops are in the way to run it flat across. Lot of angles I don't want to deal with right now so hopefully it doesen't look goofy/too boxy? When it's finished.
Oh I'm definitely sold on the idea haha. Just need to figure out how to tig first so I can make it out of aluminum.

 

I'm sure it will come out great. Either way I don't see it being a problem to get raid of if you want to make another. People are looking for this kind of bed replacement. As for the front part acting as a roll bar, brilliant, and yes you never know when you'll flop or roll.

 

I really like the way @SMKYTXN used the rat pack boxes from weather guard.


If I ever go full off-road crawler and not driving the truck in the winter I’ll be going that exact route. Right now the aluminum bed in the Canadian winters keeps everything in decent shape.

I do like those, but you loose some space, and something like this at less than half the price seems like a better route for me:

the hinge parts are the pretty easy overall.

it's the stops to keep the tailgate square and level when dropped down flat, and capable of bearing weight that really screw up every plan i can come up with.

anything large enough to carry the weight will be too large to fit within the envelop of the tailgate.

 

Chopped the end of my frame off, had a new hitch + bumper welded in, should help match the lines of the flatbed and not hinder departure angle.

 

Well I didn't use this thread for my install since the OP was my direct inspiration and helped me every step along the way.

But here is the end success.




The bed box is amazing, I am falling in love with it. It is the WeatherGuard 62", no wings.

I still have fenders and rear fender boxes to install.

 

Looks like we did it all correctly, fixing everything.

Got my Ontario commercial vehicle certification today.

This was a long road and struggle to get a little yellow sticker

 

Looks good. That sticker is terrifying lol.

for those that don’t know in Ontario Canada (and maybe in other parts) if you modify a truck with a flatbed it automatically becomes commercial and requires an annual inspection.

 

Nobody cares, if it's a Toyota or Ranger or Mazda.
They just think your a country bumpkin.

I'll be starting mine this weekend. Right now I have it drawn up with 11.5" from the rear DCSB mount on the frame to the flatbed deck. Can anyone get me a measurement of theirs to compare?

Should have a good amount done this weekend. I had it drawn up at 11.5" in cad and I am liking the height. Its a compromise between shock mounting and Not making it too goofy high. The bar is a few inches longer than the bed will be.

I am thinking of making it 72" long x 68" Wide.

 

To (I think) answer your question from the other night.

The top of my bed is 10-1/2ish inches from the top of the bed mount. I used 1-1/2 square tube as cross members between each set of mounts, then 2x6 rectangle (probably should have done a ladder style setup, with sheet metal walls instead) on top of that, with a 1x3 frame around the deck and 1x2-1/2 cross members in the deck frame to hold the ply and L-track slightly recessed. I chose that so the bottom of the rails was about the same height above the frame as the top of the wheel opening in the original bed.




Just after finishing the main bed, no lift.




As it sits today with 2ish inches of lift and removable sideboards.

 

Day 1.5 done and I'm likin how its comin out. Especially happy with my design and material choices.

That’s my favorite part too, got a plasmatable a few weeks ago and parts came right off the table with a little deburr and fit perfect
