2024 Tacoma with 5100 miles with gas tank issue??

Has anyone heard about tacomas having gas tank issues? Two Toyota dealers are claiming we overfilled the gas tank and damaged the charcoal canister. They said that we damaged the truck, so it's not within warranty to fix and we now owe $1700. We did not overfill the gas tank, so we are very confused and worried something is wrong with the truck. It stalled out three times while driving it Tuesday morning. The dealerships said it stalled because of the damage to the canister. We have now taken it to a non-Toyota mechanic that specializes in trucks. I'm hoping they can figure it out. I called national Toyota and they are getting involved. I'm just worried they will say we have to pay to fix and then I'm stuck with this expensive new truck that has major issues. I had kids in the car when it stalled out Tuesday morning. I have never had a car do this!! Please help!

 

How many times are you squeezing the handle at the fuel pump after it clicks off the first time?

If you are packing the tank so to speak you have damaged the evap canister and I have known this to cause the engine to stall.

 

I think I saw a YouTube short a while back with someone with this problem let me see if I can find it. If I remember correctly it was them overfilling the tank

 

Pretty sure this has been a common problem on Tacoma's for years. But it's user error on over filling. My old truck you could keep filling til it ran outta the filler neck, but modern rigs you top off after it originally pops off more than once and you risk ruining that charcoal canister.

 

What's strange is that we did not go beyond the click. EVER! We have had the car since November and do not overfill it. The specialty Toyota place I took it too said we would have to stand there for 20 minutes overflowing it to do this damage on a new truck, or go beyond the click for years. it's got to be something else causing it.

 

They are full of crap. Politely ask for names, all paperwork and positions, and tell them you will be contacting the EPA for failed emission system on a new vehicle. Then do it. You could fill correctly and then drive up a steep hill or a decline or off camber and have the same thing happen so for them to claim it's ''too sensitive'' is ridiculous. If you are in Cali or a state with CARB regs, contact them also.

Emission systems are mandated to last at least 10 years or 100K miles.

Highly suspect. The purpose of the evap is to capture and store "vapors" from the gas tank and returned to the engine. Generally they're located above the fuel tank to prevent back flow. At $1700, i would demand they (or you) break open the canister to see if the filter is wet (with gas).

 

It doesn’t matter even if you did pump past the click, they cannot prove misuse.

What is the original issue? Toyota cooperate will probably have to get involved

 

Corporate is involved. I just wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar issue. My main concern is the money, of course, and that they say I caused this by overfilling the gas tank which I didn't do. I want to avoid it stalling out again. Will see what the non-toyota dealership mechanic shop finds. They serviced several of my cars previously and specialize in Toyotas. They were shocked to hear that such a new truck has issues like this. Will see how it goes!

 

Would just one overflow event cause this? Is it possible the dealer overfilled it when you bought the truck?

Only fill it up to 3/4 .

No that’s in the gas nozzle.

 

Who knows. The person handling the tow for the truck said this exact situation happened on their brand new vehicle. And it was the sensor that was defective.

 

One of the Toyota reps said it was probably the Costco pump that caused it. That's where we got the gas the last time. Seems unlikely though and completly insane. I just want them to fix it at their cost since it's so new/expensive and then explain what happened so that I'm assured the vehicle won't do this again.

 

I havent seen it on tacoma, but there are other models that have issues with the anti-siphon valve. There's even a current recall for corolla hybrid that addresses this.

Blaming the customer is crazy. Toyota wants to document and fix these issues, there's no way this should be put on the customer. The dealers suck.
