Way back in January of 2010, I received this nice flower/plant arrangement from the folks who I worked with as a going away token when I was working. I kept them in this vase in water and they lasted for a bit like a month an a half but they all slowly died off one by one..except for this one plant. Oh it was turning that death tan too-it was on its way out:(
but one morning, I got the idea when I popped my morning multivitamin, hey..what can we lose? So I took another vitamin pill and broke it in half and stuck it in some fresh water in that vase. Been doing that faithfully twice weekly since. Not only did it come back to life-but this is the result almost a year and a half later-with no dirt!

Apparently this thing LOVES multivitamins:D first, can someone ID this plant and second-what should its name be?
(Pardon the coffee stains and light dust on its leaves-I am afraid to hurt it trying to clean it.

no idea about the plant ID, but you should name it Laura Stevenson Jr. the Fourth. I can't believe a multivitamin is doing that for a plant. thats crazy

well it grabbed my attention. the wife an i are working on getting the yard looking decent and planting a garden and all that stuff. i'm actually considering grinding up some multivitamins and experimenting on a few plants now. We have 3 rose bush's by the back door and 2 look really good, but one is kinda scrawny. i was gonna rip it up and plant something else but it may be a good candidate for the vitamin experiment

Not sure what kind of a plant that is but it looks cool. Does it flower or anything? This post caught my eye as well cause me and the lady have been working in the flower beds around the house for 3 weeks straight. I'll ask her if she knows what kind of a plant that is. It's cool vitamins helped it out. Who woulda thought!

That's pretty cool Frank. Maybe the coffee stain is helping it out too! Vitamins and coffee in the garden.:D

plants use alot of the same nutrients we do, including potassium, but i'm also surprised it didn't overdose on one of the many nutrients in a multi vitamin. especially since the pill was made for an adult human, not a plant clipping. crazy

I'm no expert, but I think you might have an orchid cutting. The parallel veins running from the stem to the tip of the leaves are common in orchids. My dad use to be an orchid nut, and your plant sort of reminds me of his when he would prepare cuttings for propagation. :notsure:

are orchids pretty hearty or are they a more finicky flower? whatever that is must be pretty resilient to not be dead.

My dad seemed to have good success with them, but he spent a lot of time at it. I recall that they were pretty finicky to the cold so I wouldn't think they're considered very hardy. I mentioned that my dad was an orchid nut; a better description would be serious hobbyist. He went to the flower shows and traded cuttings and plants with other hobbyists and that sort of thing. I do remember him experimenting with home brewed fertilizers and potions (many were composed of expired medicines from the medicine cabinet) but I don't recall whether he ever found successful formulas.

my grandfather did the same thing, except with rose's. he was a firefighter and had alot of time to kill. he's actually the reason i dont consider gardening a sissy hobby.

If this plant had tits you would never see another one in any flower shop-ever-again:D and there would be a black market

When did you get married? Where the hell was I? Congratulations Nate:) she must be a hellofa gal

No flowers and never sprouted a single root it seems to just enjoy being a living straw with leaves.

Hey OTC:) maybe I outa spill a few drops from the cup every morning-this thing may grow into a tree!

Me too-I wanted it to live that's why I tried this-boy I am glad it worked.

Yeah it's so crazy! I wonder how long it will live? This will be interesting!

You could be right because there were those type flowers in there and carnations and Rosie said baby's breath too-they added these types to offset the arrangement I think.

Sure Andrew:) but I don't know if this works with other plants that's why I need to know what kind it is. I should check a florist for a match

Beautiful Nate I like that. My family is Italian and the tough ones enjoy a little therapeutic greenage too.

Thanks you all for looking in on my little plant:)

i put half a multi-vitamin in a vase of water with bamboo in it. makes sense that it'd work.

cant really put traditional plant food/fertilizer in water vases to give these plants nutrients. im sure if you put a packet of plant feed that comes free from florists you'd get the same results.

What you got going there is a perfect example of hydroponics in action .. growing plants in a mineral rich solution, without soil. Very cool! Has it ever flowered?

got married back in september. we'd been dating for about 4 years. you're invite is with everyone elses, at the store :) We sort of eloped. we didn't want to pay the money or take the time to plan a big annoying wedding when that not what either of us wanted. so we just had parents and siblings present and got married on a dike at Lake Hartwell at sunset. the whole thing including photo's was under $1500.
