I have been doing some research on the vibram five fingers, I might get them for some hiking and like dog walks in the woods. Havent made up my mind yet.

On another note...I am hoping to get some suggestions for a good winter jacket. Everything I have just doesn't work for me when I'm out snowshoeing...ideally I want/need...

    windproof
    waterproof
    breathable/vented
    hood
    adjustable/ velcro cuffs
fitted, not too bulky (I hate when my jacket gets all bunched up under my pack!)

I'm sure that just about every company has a girls version of the guys jackets so any suggestion is welcome. It seems to be impossible to find a jacket that will keep me warm when I'm not moving, cool when I'm charging through the snow, and keep the wind and snow at bay.

As of now I've tried my Columbia (shell with removable fleece lining) its too hot and the arms are so bulky they get uncomfortable when I have my pack on, a Black Diamond softshell that is OK for warmth but not vented and no hood, and a new Eddie Bauer jacket that is good on every aspect mentioned above but not vented so it gets hot really quick!

Have you ever looked at the Carhartt water proof jacket. My Gf and I have them and love them for breathability and some warmth and great for the snow as well.We got ours from Amazon for $109.00. The LAdies actually has hand warmers made out of some sort of synthetic material. My GF likes it since her hands are always cold. Here is the Link http://dungarees.net/product_Carhartt_J162_Waterproof_Breathable_Jacket-219-1.html

Big pocket knives are completely over-rated. I must have over 20 knifes collecting dust because they are just too bluky to wear regularly. I have worn a 2.5" knife almost every day for the last 5 years and I almost never need anything bigger for a pocket knife. When I am gutting or cooking which requires something bigger I usually use a Byrd knife.

That said a big fixed blade is always fun!

Sweet thread! I'll throw my list on here, I've only done one hike with it but I'm planning to get more into it once I find some people to hike with.

    Bag: GoLite Odyssey
Sleeping Bag: Kelty Light Year Down, 0 degree
    Poles: LEKI Ultralight
    Headlamp: Black Diamond
Shoes: North Face (above-ankle, goretex) or my TEVA Dozers, depending on the weather.
    Dry Sacks: All Outdoor Research
    Stove: Jetboil Flash
    Water Filter: MSR MiniWorks
    Sleeping Pad: Thermarest Trail Pro
Bear Protection: Not an issue in FL, but I carry my Ruger LCP :D

I think that's the biggest stuff...I'm planning to do a few trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains and hike around there. I'm big into fly fishing so I may just find some remote steams and hike to those areas.

hey guys, can anybody here suggest a pack that would be comfortable for mountain biking, one that I can carry clothes for two days, has compartment for camelbak, and maybe a 2 man tent, or one man tent?

would all that be too much to carry while on a MB? I really can't afford another bike right now, nor do I want to buy saddle bags. :)

Lists in the start of the thread, I say why not!?

I bought the $20 Ozark Trail 2-man (should say "kid" ) tent just for using by myself..it's pretty light but I can only fit diagonal haha.

You could probably get by with a small day pack. Camelbak even makes a few. I would skimp on clothes though, just bring some undies since you'll be biking :D.

Hmm, I usually have my tent strapped to the bottom of my pack, I think that would be all kinds of uncomfortable on a bike.

Maybe get a 30-40 liter or less and look at sleeping in a hammock?

camelback makes some combo daypack/hydro pack. and most gregory and osprey packs have a compartment for a hydro bladder (you have to buy the bladder separate, doesn't come with)

haha I literally laughed out loud at the undie comment, and the hammock is a great idea, hadn't occurred to me. The hammock would be good considering there is gonna be mostly hot weather from here on out in south tx
