Driveway is about 150' (so 100' of line means about a 7-8 foot rise as the truck is pulled up the hill)
I've done it alone before, but normally I suggest have someone in the driver seat just to stab the brake if something goes wrong while doing it.

The way I do it is walking alongside / in front of the truck as needed as it's spooling in. When the cable gets to one end of the drum, I'll steer the vehicle the opposite way so as to encourage the rope to start winding toward the other end of the drum.

There's a method to it for sure... But after having done it dozens of times, it's become almost second nature. Coordinating everything becomes easier the more times you do it.

That’s similar to what I did the first time.
I didn’t feel comfortable doing it all outside with no one behind the wheel!

When I put my new line on, I installed it on the drum, Attached my Tree Saver Strap and Winch Rope to my Kioti Tractor and had the Truck pointed in a straight line, I had the Truck Running and in Neutral, I walked in front of the Truck spooling the line on. It was a slight slope to the tractor.

I did similar but not outside when pulling and to a large transmission tower footing.
Next time I’ll find more of a slope.

This is a bit of an old thread, but somehow, I came across it.
Your final picture in the first post clearly shows where the initial spooling was not under enough load - the force of the pull pulled the rope down into the lower layers of the spooled rope. Happens all the time, to some.

I attach my rope end to something that is not going to move and put the parking brake on moderately hard, just enough for the tires to still turn, if I were on sand, I would probably put the brake on all the way and drag the vehicle.

I do mine on level ground and solo with my remote control.

Thanks for that info, appreciate it!
To me old is a few years or more, and honestly if it’s pertinent info then that’s ideal.

I never had a winch before and figured someone could benefit from my mistakes! When I respooled it this time I made it a point to go further.

As usual there’s so much incorrect information online; one guy was dragging his spare tire! I knew that wasn’t enough weight but underestimated how much load it needed.

Living in a residential area it’s tough to find something to tie off to that isn’t going to cause an issue let alone have 80 odd feet to work safely with (where someone won’t drive through the line).
The transmission towers out in the desert are ideal for this.
