A certain high value item of mine got stolen last week and I think I may have located it for sale on craigslist. While I'm not 100% certain it is mine yet, if I receive high-res pictures of it, I will be able to identify it as such.

This is mainly a question for LEOs, or anyone who's had an experience in these matters. If the item does turn out to be mine, how would I go about retrieving it? Also, how would I press charges on the individual who stole the item? Is there any way to get the local police involved?

I am deliberately leaving out information regarding the item and how it was stolen in the off chance that the thief is a member here (hey, it's possible), but I am willing to PM such information to anyone who thinks the information would help.

I will update this thread as the story goes on.

    Shoot him in the face.

Seriously...Violence is not the answer. If/when you get certain info on whether or not it is your item or was stolen from you, please contact the proper authorities.

But....I would still kick his ass.

I would call the detective that took the police report or is on it. Maybe if you set up a meeting date to "buy" the item from the thief have the detective show up and arrest him.

Yea. I was thinking the exact same thing diddy. But, the seller might not be the actual perp who stole it. And furthermore may not even know it's stolen.

So...is it justifiable to chipper/shredder someone who is not knowlegable of the actual crime?

I would call the local P.D. or whoever did the police report if you called then. Tell them you think you found the item on craigslist. If you had serial numbers or anything like that, make sure they match up.

Did you already make a police report?? Cause there without a "background" the claim may be harder to substantiate.
Be interested to see how it turns out...

Seen this scenario play out a few times.

Contact the police - ideally the detective assigned or that took the report.
They will set up a "buy", verify it is yours, arrest the person, get your property back.

99% of the time the person claims they found it, got it from someone they do not know, etc and there is no way to prove they stole it.
The seller will just get popped for possession of stolen property, but you will get your stuff back.

Agreed... Contact the police. Do not try to get it back yourself. this is how people end up getting shot.

It occurred at my school, and I made a report with campus security. I am contacting the local sheriff's office in about 10 minutes.

Just got off the phone with the sheriffs. A detective is going to contact me later today. I was told to get as much contact information from the seller as possible, as well as get the serial number of the item in question.

Hopefully this guy doesn't sell it out from under me in the mean time

that would be my main concern. is it an item that is likely to move fast or is it for a more niche crowd?

Supposedly the guy has other people lined up to buy it, but I am trying to set up a meet tonight. The detective said they can't do anything unless I can positively ID the property as being stolen, which will require me to meet in person.

If I can ID it as mine, they'll make the arrest.
