I had to do that too back when I bricked mine (send the seed). Although I thought they unlocked the recovery utility for everybody...guess they locked it down once again.

Recovery never worked on my ECU. I went to a junk yard and got a new ECU for $175 and flashed my VIN to it. A few days later I got the stuff needed to do the bench recovery and was able to successfully recover my OG ECU, which I now have tucked away for a rainy day..lol.

Hoping for the best, its a terrible situation to be in.

@Technique Awesome info. How hard is it to do the bench recovery? I don't mind if that's what it comes down to to perform.

how do you flash your vin to another ecu? Techstream? Curious on that process.

also what was recovery flash behavior? Would it flash about 10-20% then error out like I'm having?

It's not that hard at all to do, really. It does seem kinda scary at first. A battery + some cables (like 10$ on Amazon) to connect the ecu to the dongle and plug it into your PC.
Yes, you use Techstream to flash the VIN.

when I open techstream now, it shows no vin on my current ecu.

when you were attempting recovery in vftuner, what was the behavior like during flashing? Would it make it 10-20% then error out?

that’s what mine did when I tried to recover on vftune. It happened near instant I think. Also, you should be able to flash the VIN with vftuner but that also didn’t work for me with my new ecu, but techstream did.

interesting, mine starts to flash and makes it random % through flashing then errors out, at which time i also get the sound of the usb device disconnecting and reconnecting on windows. which makes me think maybe its something weird going on with my usb extension cable. even though i've used it in the past to flash several times.

I am by no means an expert on this stuff, but yours doesn't sound hard-bricked like mine was. Hopefully its a cable..or Matt can help you further.

Are you saying you have access to VFTune recovery already and that's what is erroring out at 10-20%? Nvm, read back through the pages and got caught up.

Yes, I have access to recoery, when I run the gen2 flash in recovery and flash the stock 04b33 file, it gets about 20% of the way through and i get the sound of the usb device disconnecting and reconnecting and get this er message ER1632. if I try recovery with a different tune file it makes it only about 5% through and same error.

Did VFtuner send you instructions on how to remove the ECU from the truck? and the bench flashing procedure once you hook up the harness to the ECU? hoping to hear from him soon been almost 24h since i last heard from them.

Well, Good news! got the new USB cable today delivered and the flash went through no problems at all. Had a feeling maybe the USB extension cable was messing up. Used it many times in the past, maybe it just finally got bent or something weird. Who knows but i'm stoked to have the truck back up and running. Recovered to the stock 04b33 file, then flashed my Yotawerx file right away both went through no problems! Thank you all for your help, whew that feels better.

    This and that
Dang. Glad you got it running. Apparently cables are crap. Just a disposable item. My phone cable stopped the other day while I was really needing the gps. Happen to have the spare, 2nd one of a 2 pack, in the console.

Yea unfortunately I had no choice when I first bought ovtune that was my only pc I owned and it was locked to that machine. But now I've learned it locks to the dongle so now I can use my laptop going forward.

Glad I got it going because it's been close to 48h sent 3 emails and still have gotten nothing in the form of support from vftuner. This community on TW is awesome!
